Introduction:

Since I retired v2, I decided to rebuild it again except this time to test laminating it with doculam.

Components:

  • Arris 2204 2300kv motor Cobra 2205 2300kv motor

  • Hobbyking 20a 2-4s esc with 2A BEC

  • Dollar tree Foam board & pipe insulation

  • TBS nano rx

  • Noxe F4 flight controller (flywoo version)

  • Beitian 220 GPS

  • Generic camera

  • Emax ES08MA II Analog Metal Gear Micro Servo x2

  • Vivafpv 600mw vtx

  • Buzzer

Conclusion:

223g dry. Although the doculam is thinner than the packing tape, I don't feel that there is significant weight savings to be had. Ironing the stuff on is tedious and error prone unless you've already had some skill eliminating air bubbles. The finish is also quite a bit more dull than the packing tape. Stiffness also seems about equal. Unless its a lot more durable or flies amazing, I think I'll continue to use the packing tape as my main laminating material.

Update 6/17 - This turned out to be a failure. The CG wasn't where I thought it would be and even after getting it correct, it wasn't flying with much pitch authority. I replaced the elevons and swapped out to a better motor and although those things helped, it still wasn't as good as the previous models which looked mostly identical. The thrust angle also looks fine, so I am clueless as to what it could be at this point. It's perfectly flyable, but since I have higher standards now, I'll probably scrap it for parts.
