Micro wing v4

Still needs a bit more trimming, but flies nicely.

Introduction:

This is the next iteration of my micro wing. In case you can't already tell, I'm on a quest to create the perfect micro wing for myself. I really liked the lift of the KF airfoil version, but after I flew it a couple of times, I found it to be rather unstable in the air. My theory for the instability is due to the sweep. With this latest version, I increased the sweep and went with lower weight electronics again since the wing that worked the best so far was my first micro wing. The goal of this one will be to see how the first one would have performed with more/better lift.

Components ($30):

  • 2x Hobbyking 15318B servos
  • Racerstar BR1103 8000kv motor with a 4045 propeller
  • Racerstar A1S 3A Blheli 1S esc
  • 4 channel micro receiver
  • 2x Push rods
  • 1 sheet Dollar tree foam board

Conclusion:

The build went together rather quickly. I made it as light as I could and it came to 35grams without the battery. With a small 380mah 1s lipo, the AUW comes to just under 50g. With the increased sweep, CG was a bit more difficult to obtain. All the components were the same as my original micro wing. In fact, I retired half of the electronics to use on this wing after I accidentally plugged in a 2s battery and fried half the electronics while running thrust tests on different setups. Yes, the original micro wing frame has now been retired. This has been a fun journey so far and I can't wait to see how this will fly (or fall).

Update (6/27/17) - The maiden went really well. I had to reduce the aileron travel to 50% in addition to setting the expo to 50% as well. Needless to say, it was very roll sensitive. With those changes, no other adjustments were necessary. She flies very gently and can handle a light breeze. In fact, she flies better with a light breeze as it provides more lift. Take offs are very easy with one hand and 3/4 throttle. With the 380mah pack, it can fly for about 6 minutes with some light aerobatics. The major factor limiting performance right now is that the propeller is hot glued onto the shaft and is not well balanced. There are vibration issues at full throttle which I believe is limiting performance on the high end. I am going to test some 3d printed prop adapters to see if they can help. Even as it is in the current state, she is a perfectly relaxing sunday flier. My next micro wing project will be to try to increase performance. Overall, I'm very happy with this wing.
