Updated with spektrum AR6400LBL.

Introduction:

I ran across this online and decided to build it since the plans looked so easy.

Components:

  • Dollar tree foam board
  • Racerstar 0703 20000kv rotorx 1104 4000kv motor
  • Spektrum AR6400LBL
  • 2x hobbyking linear servos
  • Frsky d8 receiver

Conclusion:

At 29g dry, I tried to make it as lightweight as possible. The only way to cut down a few extra grams would be to not tape the wing, but I wanted the extra durability. After building it, the only thing I am worried about is the throw of the servos. The linear servos are not exactly confidence inspiring. I think I'll build a 2s version with stronger parts.

Update 7/2/20 - It flew, but the motors got a bit hot and there wasn't enough throws as expected.

Update 7/3/20 - I ended up rebuilding it with a spektrum brick and 1104 4000kv motors. This is a bit too much motor and I would've liked to use a smaller/lighter one, but the spektrum brick doesn't support any motors with more than 4000kv. Another option would've been to use a motor throttle limit to lower the kv, but I liked keeping the throttle resolution. It did come out a few grams heavier at 32g due to the much bigger motor.

It ended up flying well after some trims. Due to the low weight, it can pretty much glide down to land with no throttle. It does get tossed around by the wind though due to the low weight.
