Atom4075

Introduction:

After flying micro 3" quads for a while now, I wanted to see how "bigger" 3" quads handle. I've flown similar quads a long time ago when I first started the hobby, but I was just a beginner pilot then and can't really remember the "feel" anymore.

Components:

  • Original Atom frame
  • Full speed fly tower with 4s 25a esc (same as leader 120)
  • Spedix IS20a 4in1 esc
  • Frsky xm+ receiver
  • RCX H1407 3200kv 5000kv with Gemfan 3052
  • Eos 2 camera with a vtx03s

Conclusion:

This ended up being an expensive build since 2 of the 3 flight controllers turned out defective and fried a set of camera & vtx combos. After finally completing the build, the first flights on 3s were very unremarkable and just felt totally underpowered compared to the micros I usually fly. The ESC which are rated for 4s only lasted a few seconds before giving up the ghost as well. I ordered some better escs for this to see how it will perform on 4s.

Update 9/6/19- I upgraded the ESC to the spedix IS20A.

Update 9/9/19 - I swapped the motors out for 5000kvs to run it exclusively on 3s instead. After flying it, it still seems lackluster. It performs fine on 3s, but kills the batteries rather quickly. I think it is mostly a motor/weight/prop size issue. While it works, I am more used to light weight setups where you get a lot more punch.
