Batcopter

Introduction:

So I wanted to continue exploring different motor combinations with this prop and this is the next iteration.

Components:

  • Bat 100 frame
  • Beecore F4 10a 4in1 1-2s board
  • 0802 16000kv motors x4 (mobula 7)
  • 65mm props (trimmed by 1mm on each end)
  • LST S2 AIO camera/vtx
  • frsky micro D8 receiver

Conclusion:

The dry weight for this came to 26g. I had big hopes for the beecore board and ordered 2 of them when they first came out (before the reviews came in). Unfortunately, people were burning them up on 2s, so I decided to stick to 1s builds using the boards I had ordered. I liked how the 0802 motors performed on the UFO, so I decided to reuse them. I stuck with the Bat 100 frame since it was cheap and light weight, but flying with a bit more experience now, I can definitely tell that I don't particularly like stretch x frames indoors since the handling (roll) feels quite different. This is to be expected since they're really designed for racing and speed, which is not necessary indoors. I may like this quad a lot more once I fly it outside though.

The most surprising thing for me about this particular quad was the efficiency. Using old and crappy 260mah batteries, I managed to squeeze 3+ minutes of indoor flight time from them. 300mah yielded 5+ minutes and 450mahs yielded 8+ minutes. A newer 450mah gave 9+ minutes. These were really amazing flight times. However, I still preferred the flight characteristics of UFO which I attribute to the true x design. I'll need to source another light weight true x frame to test this theory out.

This is a wonderful cruiser outdoors and gives good performance with 2s. However, when flown side by side with the mobula7, the lack in power is quite apparent. The 65mm props are super durable and efficient, but the motors are not able to spin them up as fast as the 45mm props hence difference in power during punch outs are very apparent. However, the efficiency of this quad cannot be understated. It also doesn't suffer from washout and prop wash like the mobula does, which is very nice.

Update 7/8/19 - so the ESCs were fried on this after flying it on 2s. These boards are pretty sketchy (definitely not 10amps).
