skyrider

Introduction:

I bought this at walmart over a year ago now and finally got around to building it.

Components:

  • 4x sg90 servos (powered by 2 BECs)
  • Walmart skyrider foam glider
  • Furibee 30a ESC
  • Cobra 2206 2100kv motor with 6030 BN prop
  • King kong 2204 2300kv motor with 5" carbon fiber prop
  • OrangeRX R618 XL receiver
  • FX799T vtx
  • Foxeer camera

Conclusion:

When I first built this, I used the CG from the original glider near the rear third of the wing. I was surprised it was so far back, but built it anyway. During the maiden, I found it to be quite tail heavy and could only fly by adding an additional battery near the front as extra weight. After the CG was sorted out, it cruised well, but really needed to be flying at a certain speed for it to fly well. It would stall during turns if it wasn't at a high enough speed, which wasn't good at all. Also, yaws would roll the plane a bit more than I like due to the high sweep and there was quite a bit of flex in the wings on hard turns. I flew it hard to the limits anyway just to see what it could do and ended up crashing nose first.

Update 6/20/20 - I ended up rebuilding it with a smaller motor and it came to 393 grams dry with FPV gear. I think the 2206 was a bit too much motor and the wings could not really keep up with the forces. I also made the wings detachable and added a longer battery lead to move battery more to the front to accommodate the CG.
