Introduction:

I'm trying to find something efficient in the 600mm class wing size. I want to explore efficiencies in the 2-3s range.

Components:

  • Sunnysky 2204 2300kv motor

  • Hobbyking 18a 2-3s esc

  • Dancing Wings 580mm wing

  • Frsky xm+ receiver

  • Noxe F4 flight controller

  • Beitian 220 GPS

  • Foxeer micro arrow camera

  • 2x 9g servos

  • FX799T 200mw vtx with a foxeer lolipop

Conclusion:

171g dry.

Update 12/09/20: The maiden went well. The CG was a bit further up than I remembered, which is good because I left lots of room for moving the CG up. The motor prop combo met my expectations for power and efficiency. I wired up 2 2s550mah lipos in parallel and got a 10.7km flight with 17 mins of flight time with the batteries coming down to rest at 3.6v. These were really old batteries as well. On a 3s 1000mah I got a faster flight speed covering 10km in about 12 mins with the resting voltage at 3.75v.

Update 12/12/20: Winds were below 5mph today so I had the best test flight yet. Same as last time, I used 2x 2s 550mah lipos in parallel and flew for over 20mins coming in around 15kms. Unfortunately, I tried 3s this time again after and it didn't fly as well for some reason. It was rather shaky and I ended up stripping a servo on some subsequent launches. I think I am going switch to some bigger servos.

Update 12/20/20: I was lazy and just replaced the one broken servo instead of upgrading everything. I flew it on a not so windy day on both 2s & 3s and it was great.

Update 12/21/20: This is my favorite cruiser so far (for windless days). It is so easy to fly and I got a chance to fly it back to back with my previous favorite slow cruiser, the w3635inav. This flies more smoothly and is far more efficient. Unfortunately, I got a bit too comfortable with it and started pushing it to do things it wasn't made for (stunts). I smacked it against the top of a metal sheet roof trying to pull it out of a tight immelmann and it just didn't have the pitch authority to pull out in time. The motor mount and ESC came out, but fortunately, nothing got damaged and it was a fairly easy repair.

Update 1/10/21: Tested some 2s Li-ions today. The LG M29 2850mah 10A & Molicel P26A 2600mah 35A cells. The LG sagged a lot more and flew for 30mins for 20km with a in flight battery of 3.4v coming down to rest at 3.65v (charging it back up required 1400mah, so efficiency is 70mah/km). The Molicel flew for 33mins for 20km with an in flight reading of 3.5 coming down to rest at 3.75v. They both could have flown for longer for sure. With the heavier battery, the stall characteristics of this wing were much more apparent. Speeds need to be kept in the low 30%, and extra 10% higher and the lighterweight 2s lipos I were using before. While this wing does great when the weight is kept down, the handling significantly goes downhill as more weight is piled on. While is flyable, I would probably prefer to use 2s 1300mah lipos on it.

Update 7/3/21: After gaining more experience, I realize that this wing has really bad tip stall tendencies. I never noticed this flying LOS because I tend to fly faster, and now especially after I've flown different planks that refuse to tip stall, the tip stalls really stand out. I still think it flies great and very stable once you learn to fly around it's negative tendencies because I think I can still fly better with this one than many other wings I have so far.

Flight efficiency logs:

  • 11.09km (1011mah used)| 2s lion | 91.16mah/km | Low proximity flying

  • 11.04km (994mah used) | 2s lion | 90mah/km | Flew LOS
