SWBAT:
Practice and master the following 7 water color techniques:
WET on WET
WET on DRY
DRY on DRY
DRY on WET
FLAT WASH
GRADUATED WASH
VARIEGATED WASH
Write name and period on paper
Divide paper into 8 sections
Add 7 labels (See left)
You will Complete the studies in the exact same order as shown in sample left.
One water cup per table for cleaning brushes
Clean & dry brush between each use.
Clean Up Excess Water before putting away
Clean Brushes and store bristles up
Put work on drying rack by window
Work slowly and follow instructions carefully
Wet the paper first
Work water into the watercolor cake with your brush so it is watery and light
Brush the watery paint onto the wet paper
Work slowly and follow instructions carefully
Work water into the watercolor cake with your brush so it is watery and light
Brush the watery paint onto the dry paper
Work slowly and follow instructions carefully
Wet the paper first
Work water into the watercolor cake with your brush so it is opaque and thick
Dray your brush with a paper towel
Paint! You should have some opaque color and bleeding
Work slowly and follow instructions carefully
Work water into the watercolor cake with your brush so it is opaque and thick.
Use your brush to transfer the paint to your palette.
Repeat steps 1 & 2 until you have a good amount of thick watercolor paint.
Hold your paper so it is titled up a little
Paint horizontal strips starting at the top
Try to make it as even (or more even) as the sample left
Work slowly and follow instructions carefully
Work water into the watercolor cake with your brush so it is opaque and thick.
Use your brush to transfer the paint to your palette.
Dry your brush on a paper towel
Hold your paper so it is titled up a little
Dip your brush in the paint and paint horizontal strips starting at the top and make the top 3rd as dark as possible. (This is the only time you will dip your brush in the paint - next you will just dip in water)
Dip the very tip of your brush to add a little water
Leave a small space under the already painted area and paint the middle third with the more watery paint.
Brush over the space between the 2 thirds to blend them
Repeat steps 6 - 8
Dry your brush and soak up pools of paint as needed.

Choose 2 Analogous colors
Work water into the the first color cake with your brush so it is opaque and thick.
Use your brush to transfer the paint to your palette.
Clean your brush
Work water into the the second color cake with your brush so it is opaque and thick.
Use your brush to transfer the paint to your palette.
Clean your brush
Use your brush to transfer some of one of your colors into a clean spot on your palette
Clean your brush
Use your brush to transfer some of the other color into that same spot in step 8
Mix the two colors!

Paint Color #1: horizontal strips starting at the top and fill the top third of the rectangle.
Clean your brush
Before color #1 dries, leave a thin space of blank paper and paint the middle third with the mixed color.
Paint over the thin blank space to blend the two colors as shown in sample
Clean your brush.
Before the mixed color dries, leave a thin space of blank paper and paint the bottom third with color #2
Paint over the thin blank space to blend the two colors as shown in the sample left
Redo the ones you want to try and do better
Experiment!
