SWBAT:
1. Learn how to select individual pixels on a SINGLE LAYER

3. ENHANCE selection tool FUNCTIONS with KEYBOARD TRICKS
1. Find your downloaded file and control-click on it to rename it. Include your last name first. Follow example below.
EXAMPLE: Sally's Seashells Hooker Martina.psd
Choose open from computer and navigate to your downloaded file.
Find the QUICK SELECTION Tool hiding UNDER the Magic Wand Tool.
Click on an off-white area near the edge of the sand dollar.
You should see a doted line selection perfectly selecting the sand dollar. If you don't, try to do it again.
You can only MOVE PIXELS within a LAYER (like the sand dollar) if there is a DOTTED LINE SELECTION around it and you have the Move Tool selected.
Make sure to POSITION your sand dollar DIFFERENTLY than my sample)
CHOOSE a spot on the plate to move your sand dollar to.
Use the MOVE TOOL to move the SELECTED sand dollar onto the plate,
Select > Deselect (COMMAND D)
Save your work
Select the ZOOM TOOL and click the orange bowl of shells.
Select the ELLIPTICAL SELECT tool hidden under the Rectangular Select tool.
Move the pointer over the bowl of shells, and drag diagonally to create a selection, but do not release the mouse button. It’s OK if your selection does not match the bowl shape yet.
STILL holding down the MOUSE button, press the SPACEBAR, and continue to drag the selection. SEE HOW Instead of resizing the selection, NOW you’re MOVING it. POSITION it so that it aligns better with the bowl.
When the SELECTION border is positioned APPROPRIATELY, release the mouse button.
CHECK to make sure it is NEATLY SELECTED. REDO it if you NEED to.
KEEP the SELECTION active.
Make sure to POSITION your orange bowl DIFFERENTLY than my sample
If the orange bowl of shells is not still selected, repeat the steps in section 6.
With the Elliptical Select tool still selected in the Tools panel, press the Command key and move the pointer within the selection.
The pointer icon now includes a pair of scissors to indicate that the selection will be cut from its current location.
CHOOSE a spot on the plate to move your orange plate to.
Drag the orange plate of shells onto the wooden plate. Make sure it does NOT OVERLAP the SAND DOLLAR.
Select > Deselect (COMMAND D)
Save your work
1 . Select the ZOOM TOOL and ZOOM IN on the Sally's Seashells logo .
2. Select the Elliptical Marquee tool
3. Move the pointer to the approximate center of the Sally’s Seashells logo.
4. Click and begin dragging. Then, without releasing the mouse button, press the OPTION Key as you continue dragging the selection to the outer edge of the Sally’s Seashells logo. The selection is centered over its starting point.
5. If you make a mistake, keep trying until you get it right!
1. Choose VIEW > Fit On Screen (COMMAND 0) so that the ENTIRE image fits within the image window.
2. CHOOSE a spot on the plate to move your Sally Seashells logo to.
3. Select the MOVE TOOL and move the logo onto the plate.
4. Use the Adjustments >Invert option in the IMAGE MENU to make the logo BLUE.
(Image > Adjustments > Invert)
KEEP the dotted line SELECTION on the logo. If you lose it, UNDO (COMMAND Z) to get it back or select it again with the Ellipse Select tool.
1. With the MOVE TOOL selected, press Option as you position the pointer inside the Sally’s Seashells logo while it has the dotted line selection. The pointer becomes a double arrow, which indicates that a COPY will be made when you move the selection.
2 Continue holding down the OPTION key as you drag a COPY of the logo to to where you want it. Release the mouse button and the Option key, but DON"T DESELECT the duplicate graphic.
3. Choose Edit > Transform > SCALE. Scale the copy up so it look noticeably LARGER than the original.
4. KEEP the scaled up copy of the logo SELECTED. If you lose the dotted line selection, UNDO to get it back or select it again with the Ellipse Select tool.
1. Hold down Option and drag a THIRD copy of the Sally’s Seashells logo and position it where you want it. Release the mouse button and the Option key, but DON"T DESELECT the third copy.
2. Choose Edit > Transform > SCALE. Scale the third copy up so it look noticeably LARGER than the second copy.
3. When you’re satisfied with the size and position of the third Sally’s Seashells logo, press the Return key to confirm the scale
4. Choose Select > Deselect
5. File > Save.
1 . Select the ZOOM TOOL and ZOOM IN on the corral .
2. Select the Rectangle Select tool
3. Drag a selection around the piece of coral (See A). Make sure that your selection is large enough so that a margin of white appears between the coral and the edges of the marquee.
4. Select the Magic Wand tool
5. In the options bar, confirm that the Tolerance value is 32. This value determines the range of colors the wand selects. (See below)
5. Hold down the OPTION KEY A minus sign appears next to the wand in the pointer icon (See B)
6 Click in the white background area within the selection marquee. The Magic Wand tool selects the entire background, subtracting it from the selection. Now all the white pixels are deselected, leaving the coral perfectly selected. (See C)
1. Choose VIEW > Fit On Screen (COMMAND 0) so that the ENTIRE image fits within the image window.
2. CHOOSE a spot on the plate to move your selected coral to.
3. Select the MOVE TOOL and move the coral onto the plate.
4. Choose Select > Deselect (Command D, and then save your work.
1 . Select the ZOOM TOOL and ZOOM IN on the Mussel Shell .
2. Select the POLYGONAL LASSO Tool
3. CLICK along the outside edge of the mussel to place anchor points. Make your clicks VERY CLOSE TOGETHER where the edge of mussel is most CURVED.
4. Continue clicking until you reach where you first clicked to create a CLOSED selection area.
5. Edit > Undo (Command Z) if you lose your selection
1.Choose View > Fit On Screen to resize the image window to ft on your screen.
2 Press Command as you drag the mussel to the wooden plate. The pointer changes to the Move tool icon.
1.Choose Edit > Transform > Rotate. The mussel and selection marquee are enclosed in a bounding box.
2. Move the pointer outside the bounding box so that it becomes a curved, double-headed arrow . Drag to rotate the mussel as shown left.
3. Press the RETURN key on the Keyboard to commit the transformation changes.
4. Choose Select > Deselect.
5. File > Save
1 . Select the ZOOM TOOL and ZOOM IN on the NAUTILUS Shell .
2.Select the MAGNETIC LASSO tool hidden under the Lasso tool.
3. CLICK ONCE along the left edge of the nautilus, and then move the Magnetic Lasso tool along the edge to trace its outline.
Even though you’re not holding down the mouse button, the tool snaps to the edge of the nautilus and automatically adds fastening points.
4. When you reach the left side of the nautilus again, double-click to return the Magnetic Lasso tool to the starting point, closing the selection. Or you can move the Magnetic Lasso tool over the starting point and click once.
5. Edit > Undo (Command Z) if you lose your selection
Find an area where some of the background got selected by mistake, (See A)
Select the regular Lasso Tool (See above)
Hold the OPTION KEY on the keyboard
Draw a selection around the area you need to get rid of (subtract). (See B)
Edit > Undo if it doesn't look right and try it again
Find an area where some of Nautilus did not get selected, (See C)
Select the regular Lasso Tool (See above)
Hold the SHIFT KEY on the keyboard
Draw a selection around the area you need to add. (See D)
Edit > Undo if it doesn't look right and try it again
1.Choose View > Fit the Area (COMMAND 0) to resize the image window to ft on your screen.
2 Press Command as you drag the mussel to the wooden plate. The pointer changes to the Move tool icon.
3. Save your work!
1.Select the CROP TOOL. Photoshop creates a crop boundary around the entire image. (See A, Left)
2. In the OPTIONS bar, choose FREE .
With FREE selected, you can crop the image with any proportions.3. Again in the OPTIONS bar click to CHECK the BOX for DELETE CROPPED PIXELS.
4. Drag the CROP HANDLES so that the plate is in the highlighted area . Leave some SCRAPS so you can LEARN how to clean that up in the next section (See B, Left)
5. When you’re satisfied with the position of the crop area, tap the RETURN KEY on the keyboard OR click the the CHECK MARK in the OPTION BAR
The cropped image may include some scraps of the background from which you selected and removed shapes. You’ll fix that next.
1. If you left scraps of background use the Rectangular Marquee tool to select it. Be careful not to include any part of the image that you want to keep. (See A, Left)
2. Select the Eraser tool in the Tools panel, and then make sure that the foreground and background color swatches in the Tools panel are set to the defaults: black in the foreground and white in the background.
3. In the options bar, open the Brushes pop-up panel, and specify an 80-pixel brush with 100% hardness. (See B, Left)
4. Drag the Eraser tool across the area you want to remove. You can erase quickly, because the Eraser tool affects only the selected area.
5. Repeat steps 5–8 to remove any other unwanted scraps of background.
6. Save!
