Follow these steps to draw the interior of a room in 1-point perspective
01. Load ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR
02. FILE > NEW
03. In the New File WINDOW enter
NAME: Linear Perspective" followed by your last name and then your first name.
example: Linear Perspective Hooker Martina.ai
ORIENTATION: Choose wide
04. Open the LAYERS Palette (WINDOW > LAYERS)
05. DRAW a HORIZONTAL LINE (The Horizon Line) about 2 thirds from the bottom of the page
06. Draw a SMALL CIRCLE (The Vanishing Point) that INTERSECTS the MIDDLE of that LINE
07. Open the ALIGN PALETTE (Window Menu), select the line and the circle and click on the center align button
08. Use the SELECT TOOL to REPOSITION the line and the circle so that it's centered on your file
09. Draw 1 DIAGONAL LINE that STARTS at the bottom LEFT EDGE of your page and ENDS at the VANISHING POINT
10. SELECT the LINE with the SELECT TOOL and DOUBLE CLICK on the REFLECT TOOL in the TOOL BOX
In the REFLECT TOOL OPTIONS, select VERTICAL, 90 degrees and COPY.
11. SELECT the 2 DIAGONAL LINES and DOUBLE CLICK on the REFLECT TOOL in the TOOL BOX
In the REFLECT TOOL OPTIONS, select HORIZONTAL, 0 degrees and COPY.
12. In the LAYERS Palette, DOUBLE CLICK in LAYER 1 to open up the LAYER OPTIONS and RENAME it "GUIDES"
13. LOCK the GUIDES layer by clicking on the empty box that is to the left of the layer name
14. Create a NEW LAYER. You can CLICK on the CREATE NEW LAYER ICON that's to the LEFT of the TRASH CAN on the LAYERS PALETTE
15. NAME your NEW LAYER "ROOM" (See STEP 10) and drag it below the "GUIDES" layer. CLICK and DRAG on the LAYER NAME to move it.
16. In the ROOM LAYER Draw the back wall, side walls, ceiling, and floor. Make the diagonals of your side walls line up to your guides.
17. Click on the EYE icon to the LEFT of the GUIDES layer to make this layer INVISIBLE.
Check your work by comparing it to the drawings
19. Create a NEW LAYER and name it DETAILS
20. If you need to, DRAG the DETAILS LAYER so that it is IN-BETWEEN the ROOM and the GUIDES LAYER
21. Draw a rectangular item (window, picture, etc) and position it on one of the side walls.
22. LOCK all layers EXCEPT the GUIDES layer
23. One at a time, select and MOVE each far RIGHT POINT on the 2 right side GUIDES.
You want the far right corners of your rectangular drawing to touch the points.
I changed the color of my Horizon line so that I wouldn't confuse it with my diagonals; see left!
24. LOCK all layers EXCEPT the DETAILS layer
25. Use the DIRECT SELECT tool to edit your RECTANGULAR drawing so that the
TOP and BOTTOM EDGES become DIAGONALS that LINE UP perfectly with the DIAGONAL GUIDES.
See below. I also made the left edge of my mirror thinner because when an object is further away it appears smaller.
26. Now move 2 OUTSIDE GUIDE POINTS so that they are perfectly ALIGNED HORIZONTALLY
27. In the DETAILS layer, DRAW a RECTANGLE and position it so that the bottom CORNERS touch the GUIDES
28. Use the DIRECT SELECT tool to EDIT the rectangle so that the 2 TOP CORNERS & SIDES touch the DIAGONAL GUIDES
Check your work. Are you following the rules for 1-Point Perspective?
29. Add the FRONT and SIDE and use the GUIDES to help you DIRECT your DIAGONALS to the VANISHING POINT.
30. TURN OFF your GUIDES layer to see how it looks!
