SWBAT:
Break up Subheads into Columns or separate text frames
Use repetition and alignment
Use Paragraph / Character Styles
Format Font, Color, Case, Pt Size
1. Select your area type with the Selection Tool
2. Choose "Area Type Options" from the Type Menu
Type > Area Type Options
3. In the Area Type Options panel, change number of columns to at least 2
1. Select your area type with the Selection Tool
2. Click and drag the lower right tab and hide some of the text by making the area type rectangle smaller
3. Click on the red plus sign once to load your curser with the hidden text
4. Move your curser away from to see the loaded text icon (see above left).
5. Click and drag a rectangular area fro your second text frame
Your hidden text will flow into the new rectangular
1. Use your selection tool to PRELIMINARILY position and scale your text areas. You will need to repeat the process after you format your font style, pt size, etc.
1. Select your area type with the Selection Tool
2. Open your color Panel
3. Adjust the sliders to the color you want.
4. Highlight the subheads with the Type Tool and make them a different color.

• match the mood and purpose of your poster. • keep color scheme simple (2-4 colors only)• make your text easy to read.1. Make sure the area type is still selected with the selection tool.
2. Open the Character Panel from the Control Bar and choose an easy to read font that matches the mood of your PSA. Don't use decorative or script fonts for your paragraphs.
3. Make sure the Point Size is at least 14pt. You can change it again later if needed.
4. Do not choose Myriad Pro
5. Hit the RETURN KEY to commit the changes
1. Highlight the text for one of your Subheads with the Type Tool
2. Choose "Change Case" from the Type Menu and change the case to Title Case or Upper Case
3. Make the Pt Size bigger than your Paragraph text
4. Keep it simple! Don't use a new font. Change the font to a bold version or use the same font you used in your Headline
5. Make sure to...
• keep your total number of fonts down to 2-3 • If you use a decorative font, limit it to your headline and subheads. Only use one• Format consistently!1. Use your selection tool to position and scale your text areas. as needed.
You MIGHT need to repeat the process after you do the next lesson where we make sure to have LOT of REPETITION in our projects
1. Make sure the Subhead Type is still highlighted,
2. Open the Paragraph Styles Panel from the Window Menu.
Window > Type > Paragraph Styles
3. Click on the little black arrow to open up the flyout menu .
4. Choose "New Paragraph Style"
5. Name the New Paragraph Style "Subheads"
You can also create a Paragraph Style for your paragraph text or create a Character Style for something else
1. If you resize or change your area type rectangle you might want to change your Subhead settings too
2. Open the Options by choosing Paragraph / Character Style options from the fly-out menu
3. Edit the options as you wish. Remember the will apply automatically! No need to select the text!
