SWBAT:
Use previously learned watercolor techniques (wet on wet, graduated wash, variegated wash, dry on wet, wet on dry, dry on dry, and color mixing in a palette)
Practice close looking at line, value, color, and form with a provided reference image.
Use directional brushstrokes to create the illusion of 3D form
Complete a series of 4 or apples with at least one showing mastery of the above goals.
Get an apple print out and staple it into your sketchbook
Get a piece of water color paper
Draw a line down the middle
Write your name
While looking at the apple print out, lightly draw a contour drawing of the apple in pencil on the left side of your paper (you will do a second one one the right side)
Make sure your drawing is at least 4 inches tall.
Draw a second apple on the right side of your paper
Mix the Red & the Red-Violet in your round pallete
Clean your brush
Apply water to your 1st Apple
While looking closely at your reference, look where the red is lighter and where there is no red at all.
Make sure your paint has the right amount of water in it and paint!
Follow the steps above again on the second apple while your first apple is drying
Reapply water to the top of the apple if needed
Mix water into the yellow paint so that it is fairly watery
While looking at your reference image, paint yellow. (You can layer green over it later where needed)
Check to see if your wash is mostly dry.
Mix more of the red if needed
While looking at your reference image, paint the areas you see that should be opaque red.
Continue looking at your reference image
Look for shapes and colors
Layer green, light green and other colors as you see fit
Review section 8 (below) on how to create a graduated wash for creating gradual blending.
Don't forget to paint the apple stem as you see it in the reference image
Work slowly and follow instructions carefully
Work water into the watercolor cake with your brush so it is opaque and thick.
Use your brush to transfer the paint to your palette.
Dry your brush on a paper towel
Hold your paper so it is titled up a little
Dip your brush in the paint and paint horizontal strips starting at the top and make the top 3rd as dark as possible. (This is the only time you will dip your brush in the paint - next you will just dip in water)
Dip the very tip of your brush to add a little water
Leave a small space under the already painted area and paint the middle third with the more watery paint.
Brush over the space between the 2 thirds to blend them
Use your phone/computer and search for a fruit image or paint the pear shown left!
Practice close looking and use your watercolor learning to paint it.
Upload a photo of your work to the "Apples Series" assignment posting by June 9th
