What are some good basic ideas for creating your own Comic Book Cover?
What basic elements do you see on most comic book covers?
1. Load Photoshop
2. File > New.
3. Follow example below to name your file correctly.
EXAMPLE:
Plan Comic Book Cover Hooker Martina.psd
4. Select the PRINT and LETTER presets and click CREATE
5. Select the TYPE TOOL
6. Click and DRAG with the TYPE TOOL to create AREA TYPE.
7. Type "PLAN COMIC BOOK COVER:"
After watching the video with the class or on your own, choose a basic idea (See 4 basic ideas right and below)
On your document, add "Basic Idea:" as a subheading and include one of the options listed below
• Parody
• Mash Up with Two Characters
• Original Super Hero (Come up with your own super hero
• Real Person

Describe your comic book series• Title
Give your comic series a name (Example Left: "Superman")• Subtitle
Give the specific comic book a title for the comic (Example Left: "Escape From Dinosaur Island")• Main Action
Describe what you will draw for your cover (Example Left: Superman saving someone; he's flying up and away from dinosaur island)• Logo:
Come up with a name for the comic book publisher (Example Left: "Universe)Type in your ideas after each heading
Turn OFF your TYPE Layer
HIGHLIGHT the BACKGROUND Layer
Show Rulers (View > Rulers)
Control-Click on a ruler to change to inches (if needed)
Select the BRUSH TOOL from the tool box
Set the Foreground Background colors to the default Black and white
In the OPTIONS bar set the brush size to 5 and the hardness to 100
Hold SHIFT and drag to draw a straight HORIZONTAL line at 5 1/2 inches on the vertical ruler
Hold SHIFT and drag to draw a straight VERTICAL line and 4 1/4 on the horizontal ruler.
Choose theses settings in the OPTIONS bar
Press "E" on the Keyboard to switch to the ERASER tool
Press "B" on the Keyboard to switch to the BRUSH tool
Change the SIZE of both the BRUSH and ERASER tools with the Left and Right BRACKETS on the keyboard.
1.Review design requirements (see right)
2. Use a TABLET to sketch out 2 or more composition ideas. You can do them all on the BACKGROUND layer or you can use separate layers.
3. Each thumbnail sketch should contain the same 4 elements (Logo, Title, Subtitle & Action) but sized and positioned differently.
4. Use rectangles and lines to plan for text instead of writing it all out.
5. REQUIREMENT! Logo & Title should be at the TOP
6. RECOMMENDED: Use different layers for each element (See left)
Reminder: You are planning PLACEMENT & SIZE. Sketches should NOT BE DETAILED

LOOK at your classmates WORK and the RUBRIC. Include one COMPLIMENT and one SUGGESTION BASED on the RUBRIC below . Also include your NAME (See example, right)
Make sure your PEER does the SAME for you. Check that the peer review they wrote is BASED on the RUBRIC. If it is NOT, ask them to EDIT it so you will not lose points.

45 points --- PLANNING TEXT: Completed as directed
40 points --- 2 SKETCHES 2 Thumbnail sketches were completed. The 2 Thumbnail sketches show exploration of size and placement. Both sketches include a main action, subtitle, logo and title. The logo and the title are at the top.
5 points --- THUMBNAIL SKETCH PURPOSE There are few details and no shading. Thumbnail sketches show understanding of the idea of planning and not doing carefully finished drawings. The text was planned with rectangles and lines and not written out.
5 points --- REFLECTION and SELF-GRADING: Private comment with reflection and self-grading is included
5 points --- PEER REVIEW: is included in the Private Comments section of the GC assignment posting.
