Layer Styles!
You can make your lettering look 3D with the Bevel and Emboss layer style option.
There are many great resources online with tips on how to make your type look and function better.
Here's a Link to a good one. Take extra time to review the section about spacing (see screenshot from article above).
I like to recommend it as CREATING BORDERS of space around your text
TIPS for TEXT
Choose a font that is easy to read
Don't use more than 3 different fonts in your whole cover. 2 different fonts is often best.
When possible, scale graphics and text so that they are the same width.
TIP for MULTIPLE lines of TEXT: Make separate Type layers and transform them individually.
Ask for help!
TIPS for SHAPES
Use shape tools!
Edit Fill, Stroke Color and Stroke Thickness of already drawn shapes:
Have both the shape layer and the shape tool selected
Change the settings in the options bar as needed
Rasterize and erase parts of shapes if you want to!
Again, use the type tool tool and shape tool(s)
Each line of text is in a separate text layer for easy transforming!
Adding a drawing to your logo is optional; you can just use simple shapes and text.
Review the grading criteria for the logo in blue below
If needed, search on the Internet for a reference image you can trace. Copy and paste it into your Comic Book Cover file.
Create a Group Folder by clicking on the folder icon at the bottom of the layers panel.
Name the folder "REFERENCES"
Drag your sketch and any reference images you use in to the folder.
Create a new layer and name it "Main Action / Drawing"
Make sure it is not in the "References" Folder.
Use the BRUSH tool (with a HARDNESS setting of 100) and create a BLACK lined drawing.
Take your time to complete a DETAILED line drawing that looks CAREFULLY DONE. Trace reference images if you are having trouble doing drawings that look carefully drawn.
Make sure your drawing is above the references folder

The top shoe is problematic because it lacks detail and the lines are not connected in places (the shapes are not closed).
Be sure to draw closed shapes by connecting your lines. And don't forget your drawings should look carefully done and be detailed like the bottom shoe.
Use your Background layer (or create a new layer) for your background color.
Choose a color or colors to use with the PAINT BUCKET or GRADIENT tool.
Make sure you DO NOT have the DRAWING layer SELECTED
Fill the layer with a Color/Gradient!
NOTE: While you are required to color in your entire cover, coloring in a background layer is optional

Notice how the TITLE font is DECORATIVE while the SUBTITLE font is more simple.
Choice of SIZE and FONT should support the hierarchy of importance (The Title is more important)
Review the information about working with type in Sections 6 - 8 as needed
Be sure to format you subtitle DIFFERENTLY than your TITLE
Be sure to choose a font and color that goes well with the title
As a rule, it's best not to use more than 1 decorative font so your subtitle font should be somewhat basic (See Example Left)
Make your subtitle SMALLER than your TITLE in a significant way
POSITION your subtitle in a way that looks thoughtful with borders of space.
