SWBAT:
1...learn about the different scenarios in which artists create Caricature illustrations and work as freelance or staff illustrators.
2...create completely original professional print quality Photoshop caricature illustrations using image parts, textures, patterns, and paint tools.
3...build on previous learning of PS Selection Tools, Layers, and Adjustment Layers
Caricature: a picture or imitation of a person, style of person, etc. in which certain features or mannerisms are exaggerated for satirical effect. examples
Editorial/Political Cartoon: : a statement of opinion by a magazine or newspaper editor or a television or radio station. Illustration containing a commentary that usually relates to current events or personalities.
Illustrator Work Scenarios: Illustrators can work full time for companies such as newspaper, magazine, or book publishers. Illustrators can also work freelance.
Editorial cartoonist is a type of illustrator
Reflect on what your interests are and choose a subject that you will make a Caricature illustration of.
Share your choice in the Today's Exit Question. Please choose even if you're not sure. You can always change your mind.
1. Load Photoshop
2. File > New.
3. Follow example below to name your file correctly.
EXAMPLE:
Caricature Hooker Martina.psd
4. Select the PRINT and LETTER presets and click CREATE
5. Highlight and copy the blue planning text (right)
6. In Photoshop, select the TYPE TOOL
7. Click and DRAG with the TYPE TOOL to create an AREA TYPE rectangle.
8. Copy and paste the "Caricature Planning" text (see right)

1. Type in the name of your subject for a GOOGLE IMAGE search.
2. FILTER the image results by clicking on the TOOLS button and then SIZE LARGE. See red arrows on screen shot right -->
3. CHOOSE an image that includes the ENTIRE HEAD with nothing cut off.
4. Click on the small THUMBNAIL to OPEN the LARGE IMAGE.
5. COPY and PASTE the large image into your Caricature.psd file
6. CUT OUT NEATLY
1. Do some Internet research on your SUBJECT.
You can GOOGLE "Interesting facts about ... "
2. Complete Planning Prompts 1-6. (You will complete 7-10 later)
3. Turn the visibility off on your {planning text layer. It will not be part of your artwork)

Go to #8 and list 3 or more textures/patterns you plan to use in your project

Use one of the image search links provided (see right) or come up with one on your own
Be sure to use an image that includes the entire body
Copy and Paste the figure reference into your Caricature file.
Scale it up or down so it is the size you want
Make it Grayscale
Lower the OPACITY of the layer to 60 and NAME the LAYER "Figure Reference"
Lock it in the layers panel (see right)
Copy and paste the Pattern or texture from the Internet
Position it so that it covers the area that you want to use it for.
Name the layer
Turn it off so you can see your figure reference.
Use the Polygonal Select Tool to draw a dotted line selection.
Turn on the Pattern or Texture again
Make sure the Texture or Pattern is HIGHLIGHTED
Copy and Paste
Name the new layer.
Add and cut out at least two more Textures/Patterns for a total of at least 3.
Don't forget to name your layers.
Turn off your figure reference to see how your work is looking!

Create a NEW LAYER.
Name it accordingly (I named my layer "Arms & Neck")
Turn on your Figure Reference layer if needed.
Select the POLYGONAL LASSO tool
DRAW a DOTTED LINE selection around the area you want to make into a PAINTED LAYER
Select the EYEDROPPER Tool
Click on some SKIN TONE pixels from your FACE LAYER
Check the FOREGROUND color in the TOOL PANEL to see the color you chose is there.
Select the PAINT BUCKET tool
CLICK inside the DOTTED LINE selection to FILL it with the COLOR
Redo it if you don't like the color

Add and carefully cut out more objects so you have a total of 4 or more
Remember to use the TOOLS option when you search for LARGE images so you won't have to scale them up.
Remember when you type in a NEW search you have to set the TOOLS to large AGAIN.
Review the "objects" listed to the right and choose from there or come up with objects on your own.
Ask for help if you are having trouble finding an object.

Search for the kind of shoes you need
Find a shoe image with the shoes in the correct position for your project.
Copy and past it into your project (See 1 Left)
Cut the shoe out (See 2 Left)
Copy the shoe (See 3 Left)
Flip the copy horizontally (See 4 Left)
Did you find a pair of shoes you WANT to separate into TWO DIFFERENT LAYERS? (See 1 Left)
Make a selection around one shoe (See 2 Left)
Edit > Cut (See 3 Left)
Edit > Paste (See 4 Left)
You can see that you now have each shoe in its own layer.
Cut them out and position them as needed. Don't forget you can rotate too!
Add more Texture(s), Pattern(s), Painted Area(s), Object(s) to complete your figure so that when you turn off your Figure Reference layer, your Caricature looks complete!
Choose layers (2 or MORE) that you want to change the color or brightness of and FOLLOW the STEPS below to add ADJUSTMENT LAYERS with CLIPPING MASKS (2 or More)
SELECT the first LAYER you want to change in the LAYERS PANEL
Create an ADJUSTMENT LAYER:
CLICK on the COLORIZE BOX and Adjust the SLIDERS in the PROPERTIES PANEL
Apply a CLIPPING MASK so ONLY the color of the ONE LAYER below will change.
REPEAT the process on a SECOND LAYER
1. Look at #3 on your planning text and decide if you want the quote you found to be included on your project. If not, find something else or write your own caption (See left)
2. If you want to find a new quote, search for one.
3. If you want to type in your own caption, have it checked for correct spelling and grammar by Ms. Hooker.
With the text layer still selected/highlighted, open up the Character Panel (Window > Character) and double check/fix the following settings:

1. Show Rulers (View > Rulers)
2. Set Ruler units to Inches if needed
3. Drag a horizontal guide to 10.25 inches
4. Turn off all image layers
5. Select the Type tool and enter the following options
6. Click and drag to create AREA TYPE and paste in your quote or type in a caption.
Area Type is for when you have more than one line of text and you want a rectangular area for your type to fill in to.7. Make sure you are using Title case and that your spelling, punctuation, and character spacing are perfect!
Review Different kinds of Case if you don't know what "Title Case" is.For Quotes Only
1. Add the second line to name source of quote. (see example left)
2. Highlight the source quote
3. Open the CHARACTER panel and change the leading to 30
4. Change the SIZE to 16
About Leading:
Use leading to change the amount of space between lines of text
Chose a color or two colors for a gradient that will contrast nicely with your Caricature
Set them as the Foreground and Background colors in your tool box
Select the rectangle tool
In the options bar set the fill to gradient and choose the Foreground Background color option.
Click and drag to create a rectangle that's 8" x 10.5"
Window > Properties. In the Transform section match the settings shown below. If needed, click on the chainlink icon to unlock the constrained proportions.
7. Drag it below your Caricature layers if you need to and make sure it is centered on your canvas.
8. Scale your caricature if it looks too cramped inside the rectangle.
9. Edit the gradient as you wish
10. Add a stroke if you want to

LOOK at your classmates WORK and the RUBRIC. Include one COMPLIMENT and one SUGGESTION BASED on the RUBRIC below . Also include your NAME (See example, right)
Make sure your PEER does the SAME for you. Check that the peer review they wrote is BASED on the RUBRIC. If it is NOT, ask them to EDIT it so you will not lose points.
