Fonts Have Feelings

1. Project Goals (Oct 3)

SWBAT:

Explore the emotive qualities of fonts
Think about how the audience responds to Font choice
Use point type and learn how it is different than area type
Learn how to create and save files with Photopea.

2. Create a Photopea Account (Oct 3 )

STEP-BY-STEP

Go to https://www.photopea.com/
Click on the red ACCOUNT button
LOG IN with GOOGLE

3. Create a New Project & Set Up File Size (Oct 3)

STEP-BY-STEP

Go to the FILE MENU at the upper left corner of your Photopea window
Choose NEW
Choose PRINT towards the lower left of the New Project WINDOW and choose LETTER (See screenshot to the left here)

4. Name Your Project as Directed Here (Oct 3 )

STEP-BY-STEP

Name your file "Fonts Have Feelings" followed by a space, your last name and then your first name

EXAMPLE:Fonts Have Feelings Hooker Martina

Don't forget to click "Create" (See screenshot on right)

Click "Create"

5. Type in 5 Adjectives with Point Type to create 5 Type Layers (Oct 3 )

GOALS:

5 Adjectives
5 separate point type layers

STEP-BY-STEP

Select the TYPE TOOL from the TOOL BOX
Set the FONT SIZE to 140 PX
Click (DO NOT DRAG) with the TYPE TOOL to create an insertion point
Type in an adjective that describes you
DEACTIVATE the Type Tool by selecting the Move Tool
Select the TYPE TOOL AGAIN
Click (DO NOT DRAG) with the TYPE TOOL to create a second insertion point
Tpe in a 2nd adjective
Repeat the process until you have 5 Separate Point Type Layers with correctly spelled adjectives

6. Save Your Project to Desktop as a PSD (Oct 3)

STEP-BY-STEP

Go to the FILE MENU at the UPPER LEFT
Choose Save As PSD
Choose DESKTOP in the WHERE section

TIP: Command D is the shortcut for Save to Desktop :)

7. Open Your Saved File with Photopea (Oct 4)

STEP-BY-STEP

Go to https://www.photopea.com/
Log in
Click on "Open From Computer"
Navigate to your "Fonts Have Feelings" file from your yesterday

If you didn't move it to your desktop, it's probably in your Downloads folder

8. Format the 5 Type layers (Oct 4)

STEP-BY-STEP

Select the type tool and click on one of your adjectives
Triple click on the text to highlight it
At the top of your Photopea window in the type tool options bar, scroll through the font options until you find one that you feel matches the mood of your adjective
Play around with the font category filters (see screenshot)
Try different versions of the font like regular, bold, etc.
Repeat the process until you have formatted all 5 of your adjectives

9. Include the Font Names (Oct 5)

STEP-BY-STEP

With the type tool click at the end of one of your adjectives
Hit the RETURN KEY to make a second line of text
Type "Font:" followed by the name of the Font
Triple click on the 2nd line of text and change the font size 60 PX and choose a simple sans serif font like Cairo, Amble, Epilogue, etc.
Repeat the process with the 5 other adjectives

10. Do it Again, Save As PSD (Oct 5)

File Menu >Save As PSD Do it again and Click "REPLACE" when it says it is replacing your original file
Your file does not save online. You have to save it onto your computer.
Save early and save often to avoid losing your work!

11) 5 More Adjectives Inspired by Fonts! (Oct 7)

STEP-BY-STEP

Here's how to create and format a new type layer without changing the ones you already made

VERY IMPORTANT! Click on the BACKGROUND LAYER to SELECT it . Make SURE all your TYPE LAYERS are DESELECTED (See screenshot of layers)
Select the TYPE TOOL
Change the FONT SIZE to 140 PX
Scroll through the fonts and pick one you like.
Choose an adjective that you think works well with the font
Click (DO NOT DRAG) to create an INSERTION POINT (Make sure you created a new TYPE LAYER. If a type layer from before is selected, go back to STEP 1 above)
Type in the adjective you chose
Hit the return key and add the name of the font the same way you did with your other adjectives (section 9)

12) Fix Leading (Line Spacing) if Needed (Oct 11)

STEP-BY-STEP

The Leading (Line spacing )between the Adjectives and the font names should look the same. Follow this steps to change the leading if needed.

HIGHLIGHT the two lines of text with the TYPE TOOL.
Open the PARAGRAPH PANEL from the WINDOW MENU
Click and drag on the Auto Leading slider to match the line spacing to your other adjectives

13) Add Your Name and Period (Oct 11)

STEP-BY-STEP

Select the BACKGROUND Layer in the Layers Panel.
Select the TYPE TOOL
Set the SIZE to 40 PX
Choose the same Font formatting as your font name text.
Review Different kinds of Cases if you don't know what "Title Case" is.
Use POINT TYPE to type in your name followed by a comma and then your class period. (See screenshot)
Use the MOVE TOOL to position your text in the LOWER RIGHT hand corner of your page INSIDE the PRINTABLE AREA.

14) Delete Empty Type Layers (Oct 11)

STEP-BY-STEP

Click and drag EMPTY TYPE layers to the trash can at the bottom of the layers panel to DELETE them.

15) Peer Review (Oct 11)

Use the private comment s section for the Peer Review.

Switch seats with a classmate so that you can review each others' work and give feedback. Review the grading criteria (below).
Type into your classmate's Private comments one compliment, one suggestion, and your name.

16) Private Comment with Reflection & Self Grading (Oct 11)

When you submit your work to the assignment posting in Google Classroom, include the following in the private comment:

Reflection: What went well? What did you struggle with?

Self-Grading: What grade do you think you deserve?

Rubric

10 Points: Document is set up correctly (Name, print size, and resolution)

20 Points: Assignment includes at least 10 correctly spelled adjectives

5 Points: Each adjective is done in Point Type and is in a separate layer

20 Points: Each adjective is 140PX and formatted with a font that goes with the feeling of the adjective.

20 Points: There is a second line of text under each adjective that names the font used. The size is 60 PX and is formatted in the simple sans serif font for each one.

5 Points: The leading between the two lines of text in each layer looks the same.

5 Points: A line of text with name and class period is correctly formatted & positioned as directed.

5 Points: Peer Review is include in the Private Comments section of the GC assignment posting.
