Activities

Title: Changes in Ecosystems
Teacher Cover Sheet: Teachers review this document prior to the lesson.Teacher Cover Sheet for the week
Directions: General Instructions:Go through each slide. Read the information on each slide, and respond to the activities.
Throughout this slideshow, you will see yellow boxes. These yellow boxes indicate something for you to do or complete.  Be sure to either type your response or complete the task when you see one of these yellow boxes.  Your teacher will be able to see your responses as you work on the assignment.
For more practice with the vocabulary for this unit, access the “Focus on Language” document from your Google Classroom.
If you need more help, click the links in the slideshow that say “Need Help?” or “Sentence Starters.”
Special Instructions
Slide 5: Watch this short video about locusts.
Slide 8: Select the correct answer or answers by writing the correct letter or letters in the yellow box.
Slide 11: Classify each change as “change to a living factor” or “change to a non-living factor” by moving the yellow “x”s into the correct pink box. The first one is done for you.
Slide 14: Choose the correct answer from each pair of yellow bolded terms by moving the pink circles over the correct choices.
Slide 20: Choose the correct answer from each pair of yellow bolded terms by moving the pink circles over the correct choices.
Slide 24: Fill in the Venn diagram by moving the pink statements in to the correct part of the Venn diagram.
Slide 33: For this activity, you will need a pair of dice; if you don’t have them use this simulator: https://www.random.org/dice/
You will also need about 30 popcorn kernels, beads, pennies, or other small objects that will represent the wolves in a population.
Slide 34: In this game, your popcorn kernels (or whatever objects you are using) will represent a population of wolves. You will simulate 15 years in the life of the wolf population by using dice and the game play key on slide 37.
Every roll of the dice will represent 6 months; the number you roll will determine what happens to your wolf population and its ecosystem.  Some of the changes to the ecosystem are natural events and some are caused by humans.
As you play the game, complete the Wolf Game Data Table. You can access this document through you Google Classroom The table will record the results of 15 years of data.
Slide 35: Step 1: Place eight popcorn kernels (or whatever objects you are using to represent the wolves) on the table. Two kernels represent adult wolves, the other six represent a litter of pups.
Step 2: Roll the dice to represent the passage of six months. Use the total number on the dice to determine what happens to your pack, according to the game play key on slide 37. Then fill in the information in your data table (linked separately on Google Classroom). As you record data, also record in the Reason column the reason for the population change. Adjust the number of kernels that represent your wolf pack.
Step 3: Repeat Step 4 for the second six months of the year. Count the number of wolves in your pack and fill in the rest of Year 1 in the data table.
Slide 36: Step 4: Reproduction: After Year 1, adjust the number of kernels to add six pups at the beginning of each year unless a food shortage occurred the previous year.
Step 5: Maturation: When the pack gets too large, the mature pups leave. At the end of each year, subtract six wolves if your pack has more than nine wolves. Adjust the number of kernels you have accordingly. Record the pack total in the last column of the table.
Step 6: Repeat Steps 4–7 until you complete 15 years of play or until your pack dies out, whichever comes first.
Slide 44: Type the letter of the correct answer in the yellow box.
Slide 45: Choose the correct answer from each set of bolded yellow terms by moving the pink circles over the correct choice.
