Activity 1

Title: Atomic Structure: Evolution of the Atomic Model

Instructions:

In this review, you will go over the historical journey development of the present atomic model. There are two tasks. Please complete both.

Task # 1: Read this CK-12 article and respond to the following questions in the space under each question.

Task # 2: Watch this video and go through the journey of developing the present model of an atom. Then respond to the questions below by selecting your answer and making it “Bold” by pressing the “B” in the toolbar above.

Activity 2

Title: Structure of Atoms

Instructions:

Work through the 5 activities.

Click on the underlined word to read an article or watch a video.

Your teacher can see anything you type in the boxes. If you have questions for your teacher, you can add them to each slide by clicking the comment button in the toolbar above. Type the question and then click “comment” and it will be visible to your teacher.

Task 1: Watch this video and list ten elements that are essential to life. The first one is done for you.

Task 2: Answer the questions after watching the video (click on the underlined word).

Task 3: Click on the underlined word for this activity.

1.Use this simulation to build the atoms in the table. Drag the electrons and protons from the 3 buckets into the orbital structure. Use the periodic table in the link to determine the number of electron, protons and neutrons. Make sure the atoms are Neutral and Stable.

2.Complete the table below as you use the simulation.

Note: Atomic number = # of protons ; Atomic Mass = # of protons + # of neutrons

Task 4: After watching this video, distinguish between an Ionic bond and a covalent bond by providing their unique characteristics. Then provide an example of each.

Task 5: Move the words from the word bank to fill in the blanks, using information from slides 2 through 6.

Activity 3

Title: States of Matter

Instructions:

The next slide has a 4 investigative assignments to review the states of matter.

Assignment 1 is mandatory.

You then have a choice between assignments 2,3 and 4. Pick one of the other assignments to complete the review.

Each activity has 2 components; you must complete both the components.

Activity 4

Title: Focus on Language -States of Matter

Instructions:

Instructions (Part 1)

1. First, look back at the activities that you just did and add the science words and academic (school) words that you find to one of the columns.

2. Then, add your own words. Think about words that you would use, but are missing from the table.

3. Next, click here to go to Thesaurus.com. Put some of the words from the table into the bar at the top of the page. Then, search for synonyms (words that mean the same thing).

4. Finally, add the science words and academic words that you would like to use to the table.

Instructions (Part 2)

You are going to be looking at pictures related to the states of matter.

1. Look at/read the picture(s).

2. Describe what you see in the pictures. Think about the states of matter that you see and how the pictures show/suggest a change in the state of matter.

- What words will you use for this specific picture? (liquid, solid, insect, change in state)

- What will you say? (The tree releases liquid sap and the insect gets stuck. Over time the sap turns from a liquid state into a solid state.)

Title: Properties of Water

Instructions:

Work through the 10 slides. Follow the directions on the slides.Some ask you to watch a video or read an article. Respond to questions in the slides.

Practice the vocabulary through 2 sets of flashcards. Then, check your understanding by matching the vocabulary to the term. To switch between the sets of flashcards and the matching activity, use the arrows in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Task 2: After you have practiced sufficiently, do either of the following:

Complete the Crossword Puzzle activity after you review the vocabulary flashcards.

Take a vocabulary challenge by completing the Challenge activity.
