Chemistry Digital Learning Activities

Activity 1

Title: Matter and Energy Vocabulary

Instructions:

You can practice the vocabulary you learned in the first unit of ‘Matter and Energy’ through Tasks 1 and 2.

Task 1: Review the vocabulary at this Link

Practice the vocabulary through 2 sets of flashcards. Then, check your understanding by matching the vocabulary to the term. To switch between the sets of flashcards and the matching activity, use the arrows in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Task 2: After you have practiced sufficiently, do either of the following:

  • Complete the Crossword Puzzle activity after you review the vocabulary flashcards.

  • Take a vocabulary challenge by completing the Challenge activity.

Activity 2

Title: Physical vs. Chemical Changes

Instructions:

In this review, you will investigate Physical Changes vs. Chemical Changes. After completing this enrichment activity, let your teacher know if you found something new about physical and chemical changes in matter.

How do you learn the best? Based on how you learn best you can choose to complete one assignment from four choices. The choices on slide 4 are:

1. Read an article and Respond

2. Watch a video and Respond

3. Participate in a virtual experience and Respond

4. Perform a hands-on activity and Respond

Do not hesitate to complete more than one assignment; you may like the other types as well :)

On each slide, there is a house icon, this will take you back to the main grid in case you wish to try some more activities.

Activity 3

Title: States of Matter

Instructions:

The next slide has a 4 investigative assignments to review the states of matter.

Assignment 1 is mandatory.

You then have a choice between assignments 2,3 and 4. Pick one of the other assignment to complete the review.

Each activity has 2 components; you must complete both the components.

Activity 4

Title: Focus on Language -States of Matter

Instructions (Part 1)

First, look back at the activities that you just did and add the science words and academic (school) words that you find to one of the columns.

Then, add your own words. Think about words that you would use, but are missing from the table.

Next, click here to go to Thesaurus.com. Put some of the words from the table into the bar at the top of the page. Then, search for synonyms (words that mean the same thing).

Finally, add the science words and academic words that you would like to use to the table.

Want more ideas for words? Visit slide 18.

Instructions (Part 2)

You are going to be looking at pictures related to the states of matter.

1. Look at/read the picture(s).

2. Describe what you see in the pictures. Think about the states of matter that you see and how the pictures show/suggest a change in the state of matter.

- What words will you use for this specific picture? (liquid, solid, insect, change in state)

- What will you say? (The tree releases liquid sap and the insect gets stuck. Over time the sap turns from a liquid state into a solid state.)

3. Record your response using Vocaroo. Here are instructions for how to do so.

Activity 5

Title: Classification of Matter

Instructions:

In this review you will revisit the classification of matter. You will contrast the properties of elements, compounds, and mixtures in order to distinguish between pure substances and mixtures.

Be sure you are logged into Google before accessing the link below. Click on the link to access the day’s lesson.

Activity 6

Title: Density

Instructions:

In this review, you will investigate the concept of density, solve density problems, and perform a virtual lab.

Task #1: Respond to the questions below to review density. Need additional help? Read this text to review density.

Task #2: Perform a virtual lab-activity.

A. Define Essential Vocabulary

B. Click on the first website. For this practice, make sure that the block is completely submerged in the water. Pick one of the blocks. Complete the table. You need to change the volume of your block a couple of times, and record its new mass, volume, and find its new density.

C. On the right side of your screen click on mystery blocks. Find the density of the objects to help you identify each one of the materials. Fill in the table below. Once you have found their density, click on “show table” to find out what the objects are made of.

D. Click on the second website to find out why some objects sink and others float. Fill in the chart and answer the questions.
