Physics Digital Learning Activities

Activity 1

Title: Vector Components

Instructions:

Make a copy of the presentation. Then work through the activities. Some activities ask you to work on separate paper. Some ask you to fill in boxes in the slides. Some ask you to work on other websites.

Your teacher can see anything you type in the boxes. If you have questions for your teacher, you can add them to each slide by clicking the comment button in the toolbar above. Type the question and then click “comment” and it will be visible to your teacher.

Activity 1: Explore Vector Components:

Choose one of the following paths:

a. Go to https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/vector-addition/ latest/vector-addition_en.html and choose "Explore 2D". Spend a few minutes to exploring the different tabs/panels.

b. If you are unable to explore the simulation on your own, you can watch the video on the next slide that shows the simulation being explored.

Activity 2: Calculate Vector Components:

Choose one of the following paths:

a. If you are comfortable using the “Explore 2D” simulation, go to https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/vector-addition/latest/vector-addition_en.html.

b. If you are unable to explore the simulation on your own, you can use the screenshots on slides 13 - 17 which will show the simulation being used.

Using the simulation or the pictures of the simulation being used, follow the directions on slide 10.

Activity 3: Synthesize Your Learning!

Answer the questions in the boxes provided.

Need Additional Help?: Review

Review vector components by reading the information here and / or watching this video. (Click the underlined words.) Take notes on how to calculate vector components as you read or watch.

In your own words, write a 1-2 sentence summary of the main idea of the information in the box below.

Activity 3

Title: Vector Addition Graphically

Instructions:

Make a copy of the presentation. Then work through the activities. Some activities ask you to work on separate paper. Some ask you to fill in boxes in the slides. Some ask you to work on other websites.

Your teacher can see anything you type in the boxes. If you have questions for your teacher, you can add them to each slide by clicking the comment button in the toolbar above. Type the question and then click “comment” and it will be visible to your teacher.

Activity 1: Explore Vector Addition

a. Go to: https://archive.cnx.org/specials/d218bf9b-e50e-4d50-9a6c- b3db4dad0816/vector-addition/#sim-vector-addition

b. Click and drag the red vectors from the Grab One basket onto the graph in the middle of the screen. The red vectors can be rotated, stretched, or repositioned by clicking and dragging with your mouse.

c. Line up the vectors so that the head of the first vector touches the tail of the second. Continue until all of the vectors are aligned together head-to-tail.

d. Check the Show Sum box to display the resultant vector (in green), which is the sum of all of the red vectors placed on the graph.

e. A sample is shown on the next slide.

Activity 2: Synthesize your learning
