51400 *LIFEGUARD TRAINING-CPR FOR THE PROFESSIONAL RESCUER

Length: 1 Semester
Credits: 1/2 credit at NHS, 2 CAPP credits at UW-Oshkosh
NOTE: This course is an advanced level course eligible for CAPP credit grades 11 and 12 only. All CAPP classes are pending annual approval. To see how/if credits transfer to other UW schools check the transfer wizard at http://www.wisconsin.edu/transfer/wizards/
Prerequisite: Active Lifestyles. A student must demonstrate strength and stamina by passing a three-part pre-test on day 2 of the semester (details seen below). Students must be 15 years old at the end of course completion for certification. Priority will be given to 16-year-olds as they are eligible for employment.
On the first day of class students must:
1. A 300-yard swim that continuously demonstrates breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. (This is not timed)
2. A timed event performed within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface in order to breathe (or to get a breath). Candidates should not swim the distance underwater. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
3. Treading water using only the legs for 2 minutes.
Content: This course is an activity-based certification course that results in an American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, which includes Professional CPR, AED and Frist Aid certification valid for two years. Rescue skills will be learned for the aquatic environments, accident prevention on land and in water, emergency response and decision-making skills.
Activities: Rescue Skills, CPR Skills, Fitness Assessments, Health Concepts.
Cost: Lifeguard Training textbook, Pocket Mask, and Red Cross processing fee (approximately $90). These items will be sold to students on the second day of class. A conservative one-piece swimsuit is required for girls and lined trunk-style swimsuit for boys.
A university fee if taken for CAPP credit.
