Steve Rivas

Mr. Rivas has advised The Highlander for 31 years.  He's also taught Journalism and English for the same amount of time.  He's originally from California. He was born in Castro Valley (in the Bay Area) and moved to Fresno when he was 12 where he later graduated from Bullard High School. Thirty-seven years ago he married his Oregon neighbor, Robynne, the love of his life.  They have three children together: David, Jacqueline, and Benjamin. Their family is completed by Skippy and Michelle, two three-year-old cats. Steve is a Navy veteran. He served aboard the USS Francis Hammond (FF 1067) out of Yokosuka, Japan from 1982 to 1985. He then served at Subase, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii from 1985 to 1989.  He earned his Baccalaureate Degree in 1992 from the University of Portland and his Masters Degree in 1996, also  from the University of Portland. He enjoys the outdoors year round and DIY projects of any kind, both at home and at the homes of his two eldest children.
