The Unite assembly proudly represented David Douglas’ diverse student body on Friday, May. 19 held in the North Gym during the student's second period.

This week’s activities were planned by members of LInk Crew and Student Council to honor the diversity of our school. The assembly was hosted by members of the student council: Junior Aaron Busi, Junior Diana Luu, Sophomore Nevayah Samuels, and Senior Teresa Nguyen. Walking into the assembly, students and staff members were greeted by a cultural ambiance of the Woodburn High School’s mariachi band.

The assembly began with a playful game against the four classes. Duos of Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors were chosen from the crowd to battle in a game requiring them to eat a Fruit by the Foot as fast as they could, spin 10 times, pop a balloon and run back first to give their class a chance at bragging rights. After a glorious victory from the Senior class, two students from the Latino Student Union performed a ballet folklorico piece El Coyote, which represents a Coyote hunting its prey.

The Black Student Union gave a fashion show, showcasing traditional outfits while  students waved their flashlights from their phones in support of the Unions cultural wear. Once everyone showcased their attire, the group broke out in dance and got the crowd hyped. Afterwards, students from the Indigenous student Union, Latino student union, and others, walked across the gym floor showing off their cultural attire. Students were given a google form to fill out prior to the assembly in order for a chance to participate in the cultural fashion show.

The assembly was a way to kick off Unite Week which provided a different activity each day. Monday was Kona Ice day. Students were able to get Kona Ice from the trucks outside of the breezeway during both lunches. Tuesday was the Seniors V.S Staff Volleyball game held at 3 p.m  in the North Gym after school. The Seniors proudly beat the staff members. Wednesday was International Bite Day where students are encouraged to bring cultural attire while communities like Black Student Union, Asian Student Union, Indigenous Student Uion, Muslim Student Association, and more, prepared food to sell at the breezeway during lunches. Thursday was the United Track Meet where students in Special Education had the opportunity to have their very own inclusive track meet.
