New classes, new students, and more awkward icebreakers between classmates hit students again to start the new school year, and all that was missing was the yearly celebratory event of “Glow Crazy” Homecoming Week, Oct.3-7.

The Scots put away pencils and replaced them with glow sticks for this year's theme, meaning David Douglas wore its best, bright colored outfits at the Oct. 6 Homecoming dance in the South Cafeteria.

Spirit Week is part of Homecoming. Monday was Duo Day, followed by Little White Lies Tuesday.  Soccer Moms vs. Cookout Dads was Wednesday's theme, and ending Spirit Week on Thursday was the main theme, Glow Crazy.

With Covid outweighing most of last year's decisions, major activities such as dances and sporting events were limited, and included masks and distancing. While school returned to what students may refer to as a “normal” school year, planning events have had less restrictions and more opportunities. The Homecoming dance will be the first official school dance since the Covid restrictions took effect.

“I’m pretty excited that students get to have a sense of normality,” said activities director Kelsey Stiff.  "Last year really showed the importance of tradition, which gives you guys an opportunity to be kids.”

Student Council, under the direction of Stiff,  makes all Homecoming theme and activity decisions. ASB President Dora Hussein led Student Council led the idea that bright lights and music would be the best way to introduce the first dance of the year.

“What better way to come back from a tough year than with this year's Glow Crazy Homecoming,” said Hussein.

Douglas started off Thursday, Oct. 6  with the first live assembly in three years. It  began with American Sign Language teacher Misty V’Marie signing the National Anthem alongside the band.  Cheer then roused the crowd, followed by an introduction and dance by the Latinx Student Union. This was followed by a game of musical chairs, and finally the Homecoming Court was introduced. During the Homecoming football game, the last remaining nominees will be announced. By the end of the game, all votes will be tallied to reveal the 2022 Homecoming Court.

Homecoming wouldn’t be what it is without the traditional Friday Night Lights before the dance, although this year's football game took place on a Thursday due to no school on Friday, Oct. 7. The loud crowd enjoyed popcorn and Dads' Club burgers while rallied by the cheer squad.
