The David Douglas Scots Varsity Cheerleading team took second place at the Oregon Cheerleading Coaches Association Game-Day Routine Championships on Oct.8. The squad lost 0.5 points behind Lakeridge Cheer.

The Junior Varsity team also competed at the Game-Day routine competition and tied for third place. The OCCA game-day championship was held at Sherwood Middle School. The JV team has improved 20 points from the past competition and from the looks of it, will continue to improve and impress fellow competitors. The varsity team opened their routine by hyping up the crowd and performing fabulous toe touches. The cheer consisted of clean transitions and high energy moves. The girls maintained a smile throughout their entire performance and showed incredible spirit. The team was told to do a cheer which called for a defense chant in which they called “Defense, attack. Get that ball back.” Signs were also shown in their performance which read “Get that ball back.” Scotsmen school colors (Red and Gray) were repeatedly shouted out by the cheerleaders with enormous amounts of excitement that radiated through the gymnasium.

Though Game-Day competitions are not scored like a traditional competition, the cheer teams are judged on practicality of material, incorporation of skills and execution of the entire routine. Varsity proceeded to impress judges regardless and included shoulder sits, back handsprings, and even an awesome which is an extension that drives the flyer up above the bases heads. The team ended with the iconic fight song routine. The cheerleaders' voices were once again loud and proud. It was a sharp performance and it was continuously impressive to watch. David Douglas Scots Cheerleaders continue to get better each day as a team and show incredible amounts of teamwork and passion throughout their competition season so far. The future looks bright for the team.
