Team chemistry and various steals and fastbreaks allowed the girls’ basketball team to defeat the Gophers at Gresham High School, 57-47, on Jan. 13.

The Scots started off strong with layups and steals, which brought them ahead of the Gophers early by four points, 7-3. Junior 5-foot-10 guard Ella Botnar ran a fastbreak offense, then passing the ball to junior 5-foot-10 point guard Sydney Kimpton who made a 2-point play, resulting in a 9-3 David Douglas lead. After a few more back-and-forth plays, the Gophers caught up, but Botnar led another fastbreak, tying the score with a layup, 14-14, and the first quarter ended.

Starting the second quarter, the game intensified and many David Douglas’ blocks kept the Gophers on their heels. Sophomore 5-foot-5 guard Heidi Chang, sophomore 5-foot-3 guard Brasil Campbell, and junior 5-foot-7 guard Avery Kimball aided the Scots with those blocks. Botnar then led another fastbreak, making two more points with a layup. The score was 41-46, with the Gophers ahead.

The Scots kept up the intensity in the second half, but they were having trouble catching up until they went on an 11-0 run, surprising the Gophers, the score now 53-46, David Douglas. Botnar recorded another block, and assisting her, Kimpton scored various 2-point jumpshots.

Keeping their game faces on and not giving up the ball even when the Gophers were ahead, the ladies kept their heads up and returned home with a 10-point road victory.
