Interested in the medical field? Interested in the ins and outs of how things work in that field and want to learn more about it? Well, David Douglas has the ideal club that is suitable for those interests and hobbies.

The new club is called HOSA (Future Health Professionals). The club advisor is Science Department teacher Becky Karki. HOSA’s general mission is to provide students with real-world experience in the medical field. It features medical competition events in which students can compete with those from other schools.

It was started mostly because there has not been a club specializing in healthcare occupations. Its goal was to help students navigate their likes and dislikes and determine their most suitable career path. This club will provide opportunities to meet new students who have similar interests or passions. It lets members gain connections with those who have also had experience in the healthcare field and provide guidance for students. It also provides hopeful results to those who worry about their outcome as they work to pursue the healthcare field.

“Over 90% of HOSA students continue to pursue a career in the health professions [after high school],” The Public Health Foundation reports.

There are other opportunities provided such as scholarship opportunities. Students can apply for an application process as soon as the HOSA, (Future Health Professionals) website announces new details.

There are more than 36 distinct healthcare-related activities and six recognition events where members can demonstrate their leadership talents as well as any skills they may have. The six categories of competitive events are health science, health professions, emergency preparedness, leadership, teamwork, and recognition. Each primary category from the size has subcategories of its own that members can choose from such as CPR/First Aid, epidemiology, medical law and ethics, medical terminology, and extemporaneous writing. It provides HOSA teams and members with a wide range of options. These events will officially occur by March.

These kinds of competitions will allow members to gain new experiences and research in the medical profession enabling them to compete in different events that are medical-related. Competitors can also gain fun opportunities to make new friends and meet other members who have the same interests as them. Many of those who join will not only develop their teamwork skills, but also communication skills, and work ethics.

Meetings will be every Monday in room S11. To join and keep up with updates about the club, the Google Classroom code is uvzmfwj. However, as the months go by and the competition events come closer, meetings may become less frequent in order to reserve time for participants to prepare for their respective competitions.
