Adult Continuing Education

The Windsor Locks Public Schools offer a program of education designed primarily for adults. The education of adults is recognized as a process that continues throughout life. Formalizing this process by structuring an adult or continuing education program provides adults with the opportunity to pursue their needs and interests, vocational and avocational, in an appropriate school setting.

The Board of Education shall appoint a director of adult education, who shall be responsible to the Superintendent of Schools. The director shall have all responsibilities relating to the administration and supervision of the adult education program.

A fee structure shall be established annually for enrollment in the enrichment program. Senior citizens (aged 62 or over) and handicapped adults are entitled to one course each semester at one-half the registration fee. Eligible courses are marked as “SC”. Classes are open for enrollment to adults 16 years of age and older.

The Windsor Locks Adult Education program provides, at no charge, enhanced educational opportunities for adults in compliance with Public Act 81-397. Mandated program offerings include preparatory courses for the State of Connecticut General Equivalency Diploma (GED), Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes, English for Adults with Limited English Proficiency (ESL), and an External Diploma Program (EDP) for high school completion. To be eligible for the GED and EDP, an applicant must be 17 years of age or older and no longer enrolled in any school. At the time a student is scheduled to take the GED or EDP exam, the student must submit documentation from the last high school attended which shows official withdrawal from school for at least six months or the class with which they entered ninth grade (or would have entered if never enrolled in high school) has already graduated. The applicant must be a resident of the State of Connecticut.

An adult education activity fund is established to handle the finances of the adult education program, said fund to be maintained and operated in conformance with the provisions of Section 10-237 of the General Statutes.

A report to the Board of Education concerning the progress of the adult education program shall be made periodically.

Adults in Day School Programs

Adults who are residents of the school district may audit day classes at the high school on a space available basis. The selection of classes available to adults will be determined by the high school principal, in consultation with the Superintendent of Schools. A registration fee will be charged to cover the costs of books and materials. Application will be processed through the assistant principal or designee and the guidance office. Adults enrolled in day secondary classes will abide by all student rules and regulations established by the school. A student handbook will be provided for this purpose.
