Good nutrition is related to good health, to mental as well as to physical development. The necessity for emphasizing the importance of good nutrition has become more evident over the years.

A lunch program is operative at each of the public schools in Windsor Locks. Each program is administered so as to provide students as opportunity for food of high nutritious quality. Programs should be conducted in an atmosphere of cleanliness and personal caring.

The Windsor Locks Public Schools currently participates, subject to Board of Education approval annually, the National School Lunch Program. The purpose of this program is to offer lunches that are of nutritional benefit to students. Through these lunches, it is intended that children will gain a better understanding of nutrition and acquire good food habits. Participation in the National School Lunch Program provides free milk and/or free meals and reduced price meals to those children whose families’ incomes fall within levels outlined by the Child Nutrition Programs of the Connecticut State Department of Education.

In order to manage the school lunch programs, the Board of Education has appointed a Food Service Director who is responsible to the Superintendent of Schools. The job goal of the Director is to administer effectively each Windsor Locks Public Schools food service program. The duties of the Director include the following areas of responsibilities: nutritional and educational objectives, personnel management, food service operation, financial management, maintenance of physical facilities, sanitation and safety and the completion of necessary local, state and federal reports.
