Sable typically mate during the summer months or between June and August. The mating process can last up to eight hours. Once an blastocyst has formed, it will not implant in the uterine wall for eight months. This causes the gestation period to last 245 to 298 days with the embryonic development only lasting 25 to 30 days.
After their long gestation period, the female Sable will give birth to two or three young. Litter sizes have been known to be as small as one and as large as seven. They are born with their eyes closed and skin covered with thin hairs.
Around 30 - 36 days after birth, the young will start to open their eyes. Shortly after that, they will start to explore outside of the nest. At seven weeks, they begin to eat regurgitated food. They soon leave the nest and reach sexual maturity at around two years of age.
