There not extinct but scientists don't know how many there are because of the depths they live in.
They are a male led fish and they do not hang in groups there prefer the solo action for more food. they leave each other to themselves unless they are mating. For mating its the same as any other fish mate then leave.

Humans have only interacted with these fish since late 1990s into the 2000s but there have been stories of them since 1860 from washing up on shore.
Habitat: they live in the atlantic ocean and pacific and mediterranean they can be found living at the depths of 3,280ft but typically at 656ft there are chances to see them on beaches after storms. They stick around zooplankton and will eat shrimp and squid. and temperature is around 41 to 28 degrees fahrenheit.

The Giant Oarfish eat a lot of things like squid, zooplankton, crustaceans, krill, or anything smaller then them. The way the get them in there mouth is by straining them from the water with there special gills (one caught off the coast of california had about 10,000 individual krill in it). They eat whenever they find food.

Difference between the males and females is that one has testis and the other has the eggs.

The Giant Oarfish doesn't fight with its own kind unless its over food but normally it's not an issue because they don't travel with others so there's other competition. There population is unknown but there listed as no concern from the IUCN.

Like other fish in between may and october is when they will mate but all depends on the temp and light at there deep levels. scientists don't officially know what the amount of offspring they can have.
They don't have issues with dyeing much just when theres big storms and there up higher then there normally at in the sea levels and bigger fish but no main predators.
