Causes of death and competition
The biggest predator for a shoebill is the crocodile, although larger mammals can also be a threat, they rarely ever interact. Theres not a lot of sexual competition among shoebills especially since they're such solitary animals. The main diseases shoebills are susceptible to are hypothermia and lots of foot inflammatory. Some other causes for their deaths are commercial trade and exploitation for human consumption. Theres not much inter-species competition since the lack of conflict with eachother and how solitary they are. There is also no Intra-species competition.
IUCN rating and Impact of humans
Their IUCN rating is currently at vulnerable and their population is around 3,000-5,000 left in the wild. Shoebills population trend is declining because of the threat of humans. Humans have a huge impact on these birds and their current impacts are the illegal bird trade, climate change, human consumption, and theyre also considered a bad omen to natives. Future impacts that are a big worry for shoebill storks are habitat destruction and illegal hunting. Another major Impact is climate change. Humans have been interacting with the shoebills up until the 19th century, around the 1850's. Efforts being made to minimize impacts and destruction of shoebill storks are conservation groups and even laws that are being put in place to help protect these birds.
