Animalia
Chordate
Chondrichthyes
Requiem sharks
Carcharhiniformes
Galeocerdo
Galeocerdo cuvier
they have existed for about 56 million years
The closest living relatives to this species is skates and rays
i couldnt find any ancestors im sure there are but since tiger sharks are very old already itd be hard to find although i assume the megaladon could be one
alot
the tiger shark has stripes like a tiger on its back hence why its called the tiger shark although it starts out as spots when there young and turns into stripes which will fade with age it also has a short and blunt snout
it is about 10-14 feet
850-1400 pounds
they mature at about 4-6 and live about 12 years
males are typically smaller then females males have claspers they use to mate
Tiger sharks live pretty much everywhere primarily in tropical waters
since tiger sharks live in the tropical ocean the plants that exist there are like coral reefs, kelp, sea grass, and red alege.
well pretty much any tropical fish you can think off but some examples are like the guppy catfish and goldfish.
the tempature is warm water temp being around 80 degrees
they live pretty much everywhere so terrein can be from rocky coral reefs so sandy beaches can live pretty much anywhere
pretty much everywhere exept cold waters and the mediterranean sea
tiger sharks are not invasive
they are non selective and a voracious predator common prey being crabs, shellfish, lobsters, squid, bony fish, small sharks, skates, rays, porpoises, turtles, marine birds and mammals.
they use quick bursts of speed to capture prey. They can swim at a speed of around 20mph. and there many rows of sharp teeth and there strong jaw to kill
they dont really have one as they are non selective
they dont really have a pattern for eating so id assume they just eat when there hungry as seem to visit sites on a somewhat irregular basis, returning to feeding sites anywhere from every two weeks to every 10 months but its also said they eat every 2-3 days for a average shark not a tiger shark
they are solo unless in mating season they will gather to capture prey
sharks in general will communicate through body language to deter others from there prey or maybe for other reasons. tiger sharks will also eat other smaller shark
once every 3 years in January and ovulation is in may- july
they have no specific number of mates
they are solo unless in mating season they will gather to capture prey
sharks in general will communicate through body language to deter others from there prey or maybe for other reasons. tiger sharks will also eat other smaller shark
as many as 80 or more small young.
sharks like to bite the female to get there attention and male will bite onto the female to hold themselves during mating. This can be a difficult process with both sharks often ending up with wounds.
embryos develop inside individual eggs until they hatch. Only then does the mother give birth to live juveniles. After they are born, young tiger sharks are already natural predators, and they eat coastal fishes and invertebrates. then once adults they have no natrual predetors
tiger sharks reach sexual maturity at 7 years old
Male sharks tend to be smaller than females. But the easiest way to tell them apart is to look for claspers. Males have a pair of claspers, which are used for mating.
tiger sharks are apex predators so they have no natural predator but can be killed by killer whales
tiger sharks are often not killed due to mating competition
there are diseases that kill tiger sharks and sharks in genral but none that i can find that are detrimental to the population
the most common killer is overfishing because young will often get cuaght in nets and will die and tiger sharks have a low reproduction rate
there are times where tiger sharks will compete with sharks or other tiger sharks for prey
pilot fish
they mainly compete over food
near threatened
a decent amount but are on the decline(i could not find a specific number sorry)
humans often overfish and tigersharks will get caught in nets
future impacts could be polution getting worse and ruining the sharks habitat
well humans discovered the tiger shark in 1822
efforts being done to reduce over fishing are
Rights-Based Fishery Management
Sustainable Fishing Reforms
Traceability Standards
