Closely related species: The Southern African Frilled Shark is the only closely related species to the Frilled Shark
Ancestors: The ichthyologist Theodore Gill and paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope, suggested that the Frilled shark is related to the Hybodontiformes genus. Cope also categorized the Frilled Shark with the Xenacanthus genus. Samuel Garman a zoologist from the 1800s who also published the first taxonomy of the Frilled Shark concluded that the Frilled Shark is related to the Cladoselache genus.
