Causes Of Death
Predation- The Indian rhino is not a predator, they don't eat other animals and other animals don't hunt them
Sexual Competition- Male indian rhinos engage ins exual competition durng the mating season, this typically involves territorial battles in which males will use their strength to assert dominace over the males and claim access to the females
Disease- like all animals indian rhinos can carry diseases but they are not known disease that are specific to indian rhinos, and their interaction with other animals are low.
Other causes- loss of habitat loss and reduction of food and water.
Competition
Inter-species- males competing with other males for territory during mating season this can get really violent
Intra-species-Indian rhinos may also compete with other species for resources such as food and water, for example they may compete with elephants for access to water sources during the dry season
What do they compete over- other than females, indian rhinos don't like confrontation
Affect of invasive species-Invasive species threaten protected areas in Assam state, and herbivores like the greater one-horned rhinos that live within them, by crowding out the native plants animals rely on for food
IUCN Rating
What is the rating- The rating for Indian Rhinos is vulnerable
Population-Around 4000 Indian Rhinos currently
Population Trend-The Indian rhino population, which once numbered as low as 100 individuals in the early 1900s, has increased to more than 3,700 in year 2021 as per The International Rhino Foundation (IRF) signature 2021 report, State of the Rhino.
Impact on humans
What impacts have occurred- Humans hunted for meat and hides they are also used for tradition medicine
Potential Future Impacts- Climate change could alter their habitat and make it more difficult to survive
How long have humans been interacting with species- Indian rhinos were also kept in captivity either for a source of food or for use of religious ceremonies
Efforts being made to minimize impacts- Establishing protected areas such as national parks and wildlife reserves these area would provide safe habitat for indian rhinos and other wildlife.
