Tharn is an old (ca. 2000 years) settlement of western barbarians. While the territory has been known as Tharn for about that long, it was never a country until around 800 Eighth Age. During the Eighth Age, It was just a few scattered villages until about 780, when colonists were sent from Tharia to the east, and a serious attempt was made to extend that country's borders all along the coast. In 790, Koth also sent settlers there; they were no more successful in growing a large population there, although their Celtic religion did eventually take over most of the population, and the country declared itself as Tharn in an attempt to prevent further colonization attempts (and also to bolster war efforts against Attellaria, though that proved a failure in the long term).
They are primarily hunters and fisherman, and are now ruled by the elders of once-powerful families; the country is also somewhat female dominated. The ruler of the country is formally called the Eldest, but is commonly called the Crone. This office is held until death. The current Eldest, Gormlaith, was born in 1079. She does not have a particular town as her home, but travels from place to place, staying for a few months at a time with the local ruler, and then moving on again at her whim.
Tharn's already scattered population was reduced further by the Cold Spawn invasion of 1153.
This country is located on the Attellarian continent, on the southwest most tip. It is a small and relatively poor and weak country. Over the past decades, it was gradually declined in population, with several border towns (Eanu, Zoublae, Shieb and the Walled City of Tharn) all becoming abandoned. This is in a large part due to the centuries-long strife between Tharn and Attellaria, which Tharn has come out on the losing end consistently for many years, excepting only a short period around 820 Eighth Age when the king of Tharn took over the throne of Attellaria. The last gasp was in 1118 and 1119, when the country spent most of their funds hiring mercenaries from Tharia to try to conquer territory in southern Attellaria; this attempt failed, mostly due to the brilliant leadership of the young prince Nimlaure Aglarion.
In October of 1166, the population was convinced to move to Grendon Castle in Attellaria, in order to get them out of the way of a coming invasion of earth elementals sent by Ogremoch.
On November 19, 1166, Ogremoch's invasion began. A battle was fought under the sea to destroy a gate through which elementals were invading; another small battle was fought at a tomb that protected something the king of Attellaria didn't want to be taken. A battle involving about 80,000 troops from Attellaria and other countries was fought along the southern coast of Tharn, which managed to destroy most of the invasion force. Roughly forty thousand people died there. Their bodies were burned and buried, and the towns of the southern coast are now burial mounds, with no living people.
In October 1167, it was announced that the former rulers of Tharn had agreed that their lands would merge with Attellaria and become part of that nation.
