The wizards' council is a group of high level magic users who serve the crown. Commonly known names include: Palaran, Calebrdar, Sarfarith, Araigla, Pesthelion, and Kyriell MacRorie. These names are well known on the streets by the common people, and are almost certainly nicknames, at best.
Many high-level spell casters are known by more grandiose names they took on during their careers; these are as much to awe and confuse their enemies as to protect their friends and families. Those who are more in touch with the movers and shakers of the country know the wizards' council by the names which follow. Each member of the Wizards' council has an area of magic that they specialize in, to the exclusion of others.
The council occupies a wing at the palace; the hallway has a door every ten feet, but these open up into enormous office/studies, with magical doors that only they can open.
Palaran, also known as Furious Tide of Light, the Windwalker, is a master of air magic. Female human. Also known as Strafa Algarda. She is the leader of the council.
Sarfarith, also known as Marengo North, the Ironmaster, practitoner of magic combining fire and earth.
Araigla, no known other name, the Earthlord, master of earth magic. This being appears to be some sort of mineral/stone statue, gender indeterminate. It's voice sounds like two pieces of slate, grinding against each other.
Pesthelion, also known as Barate Algarda, the Waterlord, master of water magic.
Kyriell MacRorie, psionic master.
Members of the council who have been permanently killed in recent years include Eldharion, Obeiat, Inarili, Eethelia and Opari.
Inarili, no other name known, the Traveller, master of inner planes magic. Also a very powerful psionic. Male human. - slain by an elemental baron at the undersea battle of the gate, cannot be resurrected.
Eethelia, also known as Ashlan Singe, master of outer planes magic. - slain by an elemental baron at the undersea battle of the gate, cannot be resurrected.
Opari, also known as Jon Salvation, Earthreaver, master of earth and water magic. [Killed in the fight to pacify Bright Lotus]
Obeiat, also known as Harvester Temisk, the Firelord, master of fire magic. [Killed in the fight to pacify Bright Lotus]
Eldharion, also known as Raver Styx, the Stormwarden, a master of magic combining air and water. [Killed in the fight to pacify Bright Lotus]
Calebdar, also known as Glory Mooncalled, the Windlord, a master of magic combining air and fire, fled the council in June 1167 when he was about to be interrogated about falsified reports. Rumor has it that he was revealed as an agent of Loki.
These beings once put a spell on the entire city of Aertael, preventing the casting of any high-level spells, at the command of the king. Later, they quietly removed this spell, after a backlash of protest. In early 1165, they briefly went into hiding after a failed assassination attempt by Kandrelion.
In 1095, a hurricane came in off the sea into Port city. This was no ordinary storm! The water rose, and began flowing into the city. There was almost no warning, no time to evacuate. Residents huddled on their rooftops as the water rose, and buildings began collapsing. Then they saw them appear in the sky over the docs - Raver Styx, the Stormwarden, Barate Algarda, the Waterlord, and Jon Salvation, the Earthreaver. A huge wall of stone and sand arose out of the sea, forty or fifty feel high, stopping the surge! The water began flowing back out of the city into the ocean, flowing between the houses. And the hurricane ... just stopped. Like a candle had been snuffed out.
