The Attellarian army is organized in a series of divisions, brigades, and so on.
Military ranks are:
General (four star, only one person has this rank, except under very unusual circumstances)
Lieutenant General (three star)
Major General (two star)
Brigadier General (one star)
Colonel
Lieutenant Colonel
Major
Captain
First Lieutenant
Second Lieutenant
Most army officers go to the Officers' Command College, and enter the army as second lieutenants. Rank is achieved through military service and achievements. Members of the nobility typically occupy the higher ranks, although it is not unknown for commoners to achieve high rank.
The current commander is High General Artorion de Rue.
Colonel Eddard Banning serves as a sort of liaison between the army and the civilians sometimes called upon to deal with extraordinary events, such as adventurers. He has an aide-de-camp named Lieutenant Kenson McCoy.
The entire army normally consists of approximately 100,000 soldiers, referred to as the Army. There is also a small navy, consisting of about twenty ships which are based in Port and patrol the coastline. There are about 3000 members of the navy, in total, with an additional 300 who are marines.
After serving 25 years, a soldier can retire with a small pension.
At the Battle of the Southern Coast on November 19, 1166, the army lost about 30,000 troops. All were burned in pyres, then buried in mass graves in the towns of the southern coasts. The graves are protected against being disturbed.
Army organization is as follows. The army is about 6% officers, 1% non-commissioned officers, and 93% enlisted men. Roughly half the officers are knights, which means there are about 13,000 knights who do not hold officer rank.
Three Corps of about 34,000 soldiers each.
Each corps consists of three Divisions of about 11,500 soldiers.
Each division consists of three Brigades of about 4,000 soldiers. A brigade is the smallest self-contained military unit, and includes archers, heavy horse, heavy and light foot, and support (non-combat) troops of various types.
Each division consists of eight battalions of 500 soldiers each.
Each battalion consists of five companies of 120 men.
Each company consists of four platoons of 30 men.
