Folaria is a country at the north west part of the continent of Pendria. It is not as old as the country of Attellaria, but is as well populated and as militarily strong. The founder of the country was a powerful warlord named Harald Fairhair; for a complete listing and brief history of the monarchs of Folaria, see Monarchs of Folaria.
In 709, Folaria and Meest began a war that lasted eleven years. In the end, Meest was defeated and conquered. Large numbers of Folarians moved to Meest to rule it, and many thousands of Meests were forcibly relocated to Folaria. While the Folarians, generally tall, light skinned, blondes and redheads, thrived in Meest, a plague ravaged Folaria in 722-723, killing most of the natives, while having little effect on the transplants. The end result of this is that Meest, originally a country that had a thriving Egyptian culture, is almost completely Norse, with people who physically reflect that, except the city names and geographical feature names still mostly have an Egyptian flavor; Folaria, on the other hand, is people by mostly smaller, dark-skinned and dark-haired population, but the religion and place names are more Nose in nature. Several decades of abuse of the native Meests reduced their numbers to the point where they represented only a tiny minority of the population by EA 850, and still have few places in society of any wealth or importance. The last wave of plague happened in 898.
Folaria was a monarchy in its early years. The king's appointed council gradually took more and more power, until EA 911, when the king was relegated to a mostly ceremonial role. The royal family, and near and distant relatives, still live on their royal estates, and those relatively close to the throne each have a piece of royal regalia, the most notable being the prince of Muze, who has the Jade Scepter of Defending.
