This town was settled to harvest a frozen forest that was found on the island about 960. While the entire island is frozen tundra, like the territory all around it, it is also almost completely covered with a tall growth of hardwood, frozen to death many hundreds of years ago. This wood makes fantastically beautiful furniture, and is incredibly hard and dense, making it very difficult to cut and work. This makes it very valuable, and the island's population is support by nothing but the trade for this wood, which is all bought by the government. Trade in this wood is only through the government. No living examples of these trees are known in the world.
