Author's text

It is indeed the big contrast between the lady’s countenance and the other creatures’ which first calls the spectator’s attention. On the one hand, a graceful, slender, young body, on the other hand, corrupted and repugnant creatures with lascivious and threatening facial expressions.

The chosen title is indeed quite eloquent: the young lady wants to leave but those ugly birds chase her in order to prevent her from escaping. However her pleased, even provocative, countenance and her foot firmly resting on the ground give away her real purpose and corroborate Goya’s own words: ‘The one who wants to be caught never escapes.’

Due to her youth, candidness and inexperience, the young lady might not be aware of the creatures’ depraved intentions, on account of that she innocently plays with them.

The creatures’ portrayal is not based on their physical appearance, but their souls. Goya knew that whenever intentions are shady, they have to look attractive though, hence victims ignore they are captive while remaining enthusiastically by their side. However, we must bare in mind that not only inexperienced, gullible, young ladies are possible victims…
