The loose theme wasn’t even deliberate until I had selected the first and last track and realised that there was an easy connection to make."
"I’ll kick off with a version of a French kids song ‘J'ai vu le loup, le renard et la belette’ (The Wolf, The Fox and the Weasel) that has been brought into the 21st century with just a few influences from the 1960s and 1970s…"
La Jument De Michao by Nolwenn Leroy De Michao -
"And I can follow that with a bunch of real hippies performing their vocalised interpretation of Woody Guthrie's only solely instrumental recording ‘Cowboy Waltz’."
Log Cabin Home in the Sky by The Incredible String Band -
"And even more authentic…
On the 3rd of August 1927 Ralph Peer arranged to record friends and members of the Shelor family collectively known as ‘Dad Blackard's Mountaineers’ (there are still members of the Shelor family active at the forefront of country music in Nashville).
Because Peer believed that instrumental music would not sell he would not record it. Members of the family quickly wrote some lyrics for ‘Sandy River Belle', (the tune that they had planned to play). By the time they got in front of the microphone they had worked out some basic vocal harmonies and Peer was happy to let the session proceed.
In order that no one would confuse their recording with a slightly earlier release by their Victor Records stable mates ‘Stoneman’s Dixie Mountaineers’, ‘Sandy River Belle' was released to the pubic on 17th of December 1928 as performed by ‘Dad Blackard's Moonshiners’. What was recorded has since been cited as the very first example of ‘Bluegrass’. It does seem to have most of the elements of the genre in place, but, to my ears, so do many other tracks recorded during the Bristol sessions…"
