Week 22 - Fri 31st May

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 31st May 2024. More worms earing your way from the combined RPM collective's sound systems...over to...

Nina -

"Hi folks. Hope you're all well.

Thanks for another cracking collection of tunes and completely agree with John's comments last week.

My choices - 2 from True Foxes, who I saw at the Geevor tin mine café recently. They're from St Just + Pendeen, hearing them play with the wild west Cornwall coast + sea as a backdrop was apt in the extreme.

Volunteering at the Great Estate festival this weekend, 3rd choice is my fave by Friday's headliners. And in honour of previous RPM 'holiday' meetings aboard the Albatros in Wells."

("Yeah...weren't they great? The Albatros also coincidentally features later as well." Tim)

Sofrito: a version by the Mambisimo Big Band - "One of my daughters spent a few months travelling in Central and South America and this song is one of the gems she unearthed. The version she introduced me to is the original one (by Mongo Santamaria - also on YT), but when browsing for a vid I came across this mesmerising version. Anyone with a pulse will be blown away by the trumpet solo (starts 1:23 in). Great way to start to Saturday!"

"Hi Everyone, I trust you are all well. Here are three LP tracks that I've listened to this week..."

Food Clothes and Shelter by Misty In Roots - "From The LP 'Musi-O-Tunya'. I've chosen tracks from this album previously and I'm sure I've explained the meaning of it's title before so I won't repeat myself!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XidSL2wu0W8

A Subaltern's Love-song by Sir John Betjeman (Music by Jim Parker) - "From the LP 'Sir John Betjeman's Britain'. Released in 1977 in honour of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Excellent cover painting by Ruskin Spear RA. Unfortunately, this version doesn't seem to be available on YouTube so I've chosen a recital without the music of Jim Parker and the New Philharmonia Orchestra. This version has, however, a touching introduction from JB."

Get Yourself A Man by Comus - "From the 1974 LP 'To Keep From Crying'. Nice bit of free-form alto sax towards the end courtesy of Didier Malherbe of Gong."

"Most of my music encounters have been live this week...a couple of tunes sessions, a jazz band in Kirkbymoorside church and a LSD duo outing..."

"Last Friday night, Ewan and myself played a set at a gig in aid of the Kirkbymoorside Environment Group. Mentioning the Albatros at Wells-Next-The-Sea as the inspiration behind these tune titles, the set was commented upon to me the next day by someone who'd enjoyed these jigs written by Ewan and also my short intro describing how the ship used to be....bet it's not as nautically bohemian any more. The chatter at the start of the track was recorded before a gig we played there...and if you listen carefully you can here Luke (bodhran player and FIAF founder) opening a can of drink and his dad Bill's distinctive laugh and some mysterious person enquiring, "Are you going to Folk In A Field this year?". "

"The other performer on the night's bill was Amy May Ellis from Farndale, now living in Bristol, an original and quirky performer; she certainly captivated the audience with a set of highly atmospheric songs."

Blue Skies by Amy May Ellis -

"I put together a collection of songs and tunes to play as the audience were waiting for the gig to start...this one has lodged itself in my head."
