Week 42 - Fri 18th Oct
Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 18th September 2024. This week, in order of submission...over to...
Tony -
Back Down South by Larkin Poe - "Have been hoping for a chance to see these girls perform - they were at the Cambridge Folk festival this year but I was already committed to something else - Doh!"
Four Seasons In One Day by Crowded House -
Fire Lake by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band -
Piers -
"Most of my Youtube time this week has been taken up by Rollin’ Westward’ a 1939 movie Starring Tex Ritter & Dorothy Fay. But, as I don't know how to edit clips out, I haven’t been able to chose anything from its fabulous sound track even though it starts with a glorious Mexican dance sequence and Tex singing 'A Cowboy’s Life For Me.. Yip!’ whilst wearing his signature ten gallon hat…. classic stuff! (I am still fascinated by those Hollywood Mexican dance routines...). As a result my choices are a little more mundane."
Dark Holler Blues by Doc Watson & Clarence Ashley -
East Virginia Blues by Bob Dylan & Earl Scruggs -
"I often think that sometimes old tunes are the best… I also recalled that The Yardbirds ‘For Your Love’ (written by Graham Gouldman) wasn’t the first ‘Hit’ to utilise the sound of a harpsichord! I dug out this version of a very old pop chart topper 'from the vaults'. This was written by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini and his lyricist Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian. Another one given a modern twist with a harpsichord ."
Plaisir d’amour by Yvonne Printemps -

"I imagine that the RPM collective members are familiar with the YT channel of Rick Beato. I first encountered him via click bait items of his, such as the Top 10 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time, Best Acoustic Guitar Intros, Top 20 Bass Riffs etc."
"Enjoyable as such items were, I soon came to realise that actually Rick Beato is a musical genius and the most thoughtful (and thought-provoking), intelligent and articulate musicologist and commentator."
"The most rewarding of his output, without doubt, is the collection of interviews he has conducted with numerous musicians, from across the 'popular' music spectrum. He asks intelligent questions, delves beneath the trite surface of mainstream media celeb interviews, and clearly impresses his interlocutors with his in-depth knowledge and appreciation of their work. He is also a very accomplished multi-instrumentalist."
"I've been listening this week to Brad Mehldau and chanced upon Beato's interview with Mehldau. I have included a link to that interview - (not a bonus song, honest, Tim), which is a good example of what I have described above."
"I think Beato's legacy will be almost on a par with Melvyn Bragg's In Our Time series."
Everything in its Right Place (Radiohead cover) by Brad Mehldau Trio

"Hi RPMers, I hope you're all keeping safe and well. My three for this week are from three different formats for accessing music: the first is from one of my Spotify playlists, the second is from a CD and the third is from an LP."
Things Get Better by Eddie Floyd - "From about 1982 to around 2010 I had stints as bass player in four different Soul Bands (Living Proof, Lucas & The Sixties Soul Band, Souled Out and The Soul Traders). It was always a thrill and a pleasure when this little gem was on the set-list. In all four bands our repertoire consisted mainly of classic tracks from the Motown and Stax/Atlantic labels and those wonderful bass lines (courtesy of James Jamerson, David Hood and Donald 'Duck' Dunn among others) were a joy to play."
Salka by Sigur Ros - "Both powerful and ambient (and, of course, spiritual)."
Think Twice by Kaito - "This highly imaginative piece from Kaito's 'Band Red' LP features our very own RPMer Dave on lead guitar. Superb. Incidentally, lead vocalist/guitarist Nikki Colk was a student of mine when I was an Art Teacher. It's a small World...."
Nina -
"Hi folks. 2 of my 3 have a country-ish feel this week, seem to have heard these a lot this week, stuck in my head."
A Bar Song (Tipsy) by Shaboozey -
I Had Some Help by Post Malone -
Too Sweet by Hoozier -

"Take care + have a great weekend all."
Philip -
"This week, my choices are two bands with similar sounding names. I must confess I have ambivalent feelings about The Doors, as I think they were a great band with a frankly ridiculously pretentious frontman. Of course any lizard people out there who think he was a genuinely great poet may feel free to argue."
Roadhouse Blues by The Doors -
House Parties by Dawes - "These guys, however, are great, and this is from the new album "Oh Brother," out today and bought on a visit to Norwich."

"Hi RPMers, thanks for the great picks last week. Here’s my 3."
The Wait by Killing Joke -
Mercy Seat by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds -
Deadlock by Can -
Tim -
"This week, some English trad sandwiched between two 80s favourites..."
Script For A Jester's Tear by Marillion - "Marillion were my favourite of the early 80s 'neo prog' bands and here's the title track from their 1983 debut LP which I bought upon release. A perfect album in my view."
Grenville Morris by Leveret - "A new trad tune written by Sam Sweeney...and not in fact a Morris dance tune but in honour of a gentleman of said name, apparently."
Nirvana by The Cult - "...and another perfect 80s album, this time from '85. Pulled this out of the car's random CD box and it still sounds totally brilliant. Here's the lead off track."
'Til Next Time...
