Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 5th April 2024. Here's a bunch of post Easter sounds to while away another rainy weekend...over to...
"Hi folks. Hope all's good.
Here's my choices - 3 fairly dramatic + a cutesie extra number from Gomez if Tim allows..."("Yep, I was waiting for the bonus track floodgates to open."...Tim)
Good Luck by Basement Jaxx featuring Lisa Kekaula - "Yes, Lisa - 'ave it! Raucous, ballsy & emotive."
Nancy Boy by Placebo - "One of Brian's finest in my humble opinion, from Placebo's debut LP in 1996. (+ Could you ever hope to find a more un-Brian Brian?😁) Slight sideways pop at Brett Anderson/sexual tourism, lyrically very clever. Didn't share the official video 'cos the clown freaks me out."
R & B by English Teacher (live at WFUV) - "Stonking bass line + the drummer's no slouch, despite looking about 11!"
Bonus Track!
If I Ask You Nicely by Gomez - "More funky drumming!"

"TTFN folks."
Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen - "Performed operatic style at last week's lunch time music in Kirkbymoorside Church."
"More eggsciting Easter tunes from all RPMers last week and thanks to Jean especially for her New Orleans memoirs..
A Japanese American friend, whose musical tastes I very much respect, was lucky enough to be in Knoxvillfe for the Big Ears festival a couple of weeks ago. Imagine my surprise when she told me Adrianne Lenker clashed with Charles Lloyd and that she would have to miss him !
So I had to check this out more thoroughly, especially when I saw she was playing 3 (yes THREE) nights at The Barbican. I listened to a lot of stuff and I still don't really get it."
"However, here is..."
Adrianne Lenker with Sadness as a Gift -
"Next up with a book tie in, the biography of Terry Allen by Brendan Greaves entitled Truckload of Art was released this week. And so...."
Terry Allen with Truckload of Art -
"And finally a rather excellent duo who I most certainly do get..."
Ordinary Elephant with Scars We Keep -
"Hi RPMers, Hope you are all keeping well. Here are three tracks heard in the past week..."
Joy By Smoove and Turrell - "Went to see these chaps at Norwich Arts Centre on Saturday. Excellent!"
Too Much, Too Young (Live) by The Specials - "Watched a very interesting 2-Tone documentary on BBC4; hugely entertaining."
Advent Of Panurge (Live) by Gentle Giant - "From a recently purchased live LP."
"A quick one as it is getting late. Three songs that I have heard performed live at the same gig this week, one is a cover..."
Lady with the Braid by Dory Previn -
Wilder When I Was With You by Sarah Jane Scouten -
Calliope by Olivia Chaney -
"Noticing the advance of Spring each day - the early chestnut trees in particular - put me in mind of one of my favourite Larkin poems (The Trees) which, in turn, sent me off through my Collected Poems for others which I have long loved.
Larkin is, I believe, the best British poet of the second half of the last century. I most admire his ability to employ everyday language to address sometimes profound issues; it also disguises the often technically accomplished verse forms."
The Trees - "Not a profound poem but a timely one."

Going, Going - "An early environmental warning poem which identifies commercial development as a major contributor to the un-greening of the countryside."

The Old Fools - "I think this is a simply devastating dissection of ageing, filled with memorable lines and images ('extinction's alp') and the tone is typical Larkin: clear-sighted, sardonic yet not cynical. Sadly (ironically?) he never got to fulfil the prophecy of his final words, having died relatively young himself."
"When I want to remind myself that there are much more positive and far less bleak views of ageing, I'll read Tennyson's 'Ulysses'."

"Here are my 3 for the week. Hope everyone is ok - looks like sun might be on it's way soon..... but if it rains there's always the music to while away the time."
Two Pairs Of Hands by Mark Knopfler - "3rd release from the upcoming album One Deep River. My copy is on order."
Ride With Your Daddy Tonight by Brunning Sunflower Blues Band - "First of two this week based on a compilation set I have called "History of UK Blues and R & B 1955 - 2001. Bob Brunning preceded John McVie and was a founding member of what would become Fleetwood Mac. They released material between 1968 and 1971."
Fool For The City by Foghat - "The band formed in the early 70's from musicians who left Savoy Brown and who were joined by Rod Price on slide guitar."
"Hi RPMers, this week it’s a 'things never change' track plus an old one and a new one; all the best to you."
Sheriff Fatman by Carter USM -
Ladies of the Canyon by Joni Mitchell -
Citi na gCumann by David Murphy -
"As mentioned last week, I'll start with Sierra Ferrell, but then move on to a song by one of my favourite artists that seems to follow quite naturally after Sierra's number."
Lighthouse by Sierra Ferrell -

Waiting For You by T-Bone Burnett -

"And finally, something that seems to have caused some controversy, but Dolly likes it, so there! Whereas Dolly "begged," Beyonce "warns"."
Jolene by Beyonce -

"Best wishes to everyone."
"A bit of an odd mix this week...but that's how it often is."
Nervous Shakedown by AC/DC - "Happy birthday Angus Young for last Sunday (69). Here's something from the oft overlooked mid 80s, a period which saw the band's albums receive lukewarm at best reception from the music press, which is a shame because there are some classic AC/DC numbers....like this one..."
Falling Through The Rising Sun by Daisy Rickman - "I've been playing Daisy's new album, Howl, on and off over the past few weeks, released to coincide with the Spring Equinox. It's a pretty laid back freak folk trippy hippy outing....which is a good thing in my book."
Still Raining, Still Dreaming by Jimi Hendrix - "This one seemed to compliment the weather at the moment...."
'Til Next Time...
