Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 12th July 2024. Hope RPMers who attended Folk In A Field are all dried out...bit damp, wasn't it? Here's this week's nice noises from the collective...over to...
"I wasn't able to make it to Folk In A Field this year, so my first choices are two favourites who played last weekend..."
Gallows Justice by Ferocious Dog -
Bold Sir Rylas performed by Spiers and Boden -
"Lastly, here's something from the Black Country where I grew up..."
Black Dog / White Horse by Big Special -
"Well - the Folk in a Field Festival was a treat. Bumped into some old friends and had some very nice food. It also rained rather hard (& Rather a lot). The fields were a bit squidgy underfoot but our tent maintained it’s integrity and we remained dry!
A favourite moment was provided for me by Lefty Chris and Friends. They were billed to play on ‘the Pallet Stage’ but due to a cloudburst as the rain fell they played a fabulously intimate acoustic set under the awning which covered the seating in the traders area. (Where a few of us jammed late on Saturday night). Lefty Chris writes clever sensitive songs which were well played with lots of positive community spirit by superb musicians (one of whom, to everyone’s delight, took a solo on a duck call whistle)."
Help Me to Shine by Lefty Chris -
"And one of the few covers that Lefty Chris played was this song written by Jesse Fuller, which was also the first track on side one of the very first Bob Dylan album. I have been singing it ever since…"
You're No Good by Jesse Fuller -
"And meanwhile out of the rain and back in the real world… (?) this is still rather nice."
Shenandoah (For Johnny Smith) by Bill Frisell -
"I've followed Rufus Wainwright's career for over a quarter of a century. These three songs span that career to date. We've seen him perform a few times - he's always hugely committed and entertaining."
Beauty Mark ('Rufus Wainwright' 1997) - "A song of filial devotion to the much-lamented Kate McGarrigle."

Dinner at Eight ('Want One' 2003) - "And, for balance, a song about his relationship with his father. They fell out at this dinner when Rufus boasted about being featured on the cover of 'Rolling Stone'.
I think this particular song rivals Schubert's Lieder in its structure, melodic strength and poetic symmetry. All the same, I struggled to choose just one song from this sublime album."

Damsel in Distress ('Unfollow the Rules' 2021) - "Still tuneful after all these years."

"Here's my three for the week."
Hot Blooded by Foreigner -
Me And My Woman by Keef Hartley Band -
I Feel Free by Jack Bruce, Gary Moore & Gary Husband -
"It seems we have reason to celebrate July the 4th (of course I'm still celebrating May the 4th), as we appear to have a Government that is appointing people to ministerial positions according to their areas of knowledge, interest and experience. Competence and professionalism might not be very exciting but it's certainly better than what went before. Politics as public service rather than self-service... let's hope it continues as it seems to have started.
So, then, two songs with the same title. Okay, one is about a fractious father-son relationship as the son is about to leave the family home, and the other concerns domestic abuse, but there's a connection to my first sentence above."
Independence Day by Bruce Springsteen - "A live performance just after release of the 'Darkness' album of a song that appeared two years later on 'The River'."
Independence Day by Martina McBride -
"Finally, lettuce dedicate this last number to the author of that celebrated piece of science fiction "Ten Years To Save The West." (My thanks to Mrs May for this joke - apparently she also said that Bo Jo's memoir should be filed under "romantic fiction." Hands up those who thought she had no sense of humour).
She's Not There by The Zombies -

"Best wishes to all RPMers."
"Greetings to all RPMers and to those who attended Folk in A Field I hope you all had a great time.
Unable to ween myself off the latest excuse for a Grateful Dead reissue. So here are my choices."
Scarlet Begonias by Grateful Dead -
Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo by Grateful Dead (Live at UNR 5/12/74) -
Ship Of Fools by Grateful Dead -

"That's All Folks."
"Hi folks. Hope all who went to FIAF had a wonderful time.
Thanks as ever for the superb music, really enjoyed catching up with the last few weeks & listening to your choices.
Just 2 this week, I'm on 10th day of visit from parents, both in their 80's, both with dementia + various health issues. Hard going..."
Rectify by Beth Orton -
"Lovely to catch up with some current (and some lapsed) RPMers at FIAF last weekend. Highlights for me were Stick In The Wheel and Spiers and Boden. The best bit however was probably on Saturday afternoon when the rain stopped for a while, and the sky cleared, and everybody grinned and danced."
Champion at Keeping Them Rollin’ & The Brisk Lad performed by Stick In The Wheel -
Bluey Brink performed Spiers and Boden -
"Plus here's a traditional tune that Perce and I are currently trying to learn..."
The Hare in the Corn performed by Baron Collins-Hill -
"Hello Everyone. It was great to meet up with some past and present RPM members at Folk In A Field festival last weekend.... and also have a bit of a catch-up with Tim. Shame about the weather!
This week I've been playing a couple of LPs by acts that I've been aware of for decades but have only purchased any of their 'product' in the past year or so. A track from each make up my first two choices. My third track is from one of my favourite acts from Folk In A Field."
The Devil By The Enid -
Making History by Linton Kwesi Johnson -
Speaking In Tongues by The Cable Street Collective -
"Thought I'd do the traditional Folk In A Field "my-highlights-of-the-festival" pick this week as well....probably also continuing next time too."
"Here's one off recent album Kleptocracy from Saturday night's closing band."
Tell God And The Devil by Ferocious Dog -
"It was an absolute pleasure to have the next two acts at the festival..."
"...and I now know why Ian of SITW has no D string on his guitar."
Bedlam performed by Stick In The Wheel -
"Pulling the biggest audience and indeed the best bit of sunshine of the whole weekend, we'll finish this week with two masters of the English tradition."
Cuckoo's Nest / Saltash / William Irwin's Modal Hornpipe performed by Spiers and Boden -
'Till Next Time ...
