Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 15th November 2024. It's the Beaver Moon edition, last supermoon of 2024...over to...
"Hi everyone. I hope you'll indulge me for this and the next two weeks, as I'd like to offer my eight Desert Island Disc choices (for what it's worth).
As there are only 8 discs allowed, I'll start with items 8 and 7 this week, then three each week following."
Oliver's Army by Elvis Costell and the Attractions - "Choice No. 8: I've loved EC since I first saw him in all his New Wave pomp at Brighton Dome in 1976. Of course it's difficult to single out one track, but I've largely gone for upbeat selections to keep me positive on the island. Costello called this track 'Abba with lyrics'. There is an official video but it hasn't aged well, besides here the audio has been remastered."

Hello, Goodbye by The Beatles - "Choice No. 7: Probably the ultimate in futile exercises: choose one Beatles song. In the end, I remember how much the early and mid-60s singles output was incredibly exciting and eagerly awaited. And this is another throwaway pop gem. Lousy lip-syncing on this vid, but always a joy to see them playing in any guise."

"Before I introduce my choices for this week, would you be kind enough to allow me a short rant? Is anyone else fed up with the latest verbal tic that seems to have become popular in conversation? I speak of course of the habit of prefacing a statement with "I'm not gonna lie...". I mean what are they trying to tell us? That normally they would lie but on this special occasion they'll be honest?
I've particularly noticed this because Jacquie likes to watch "Strictly It Takes Two" every week night after the early evening news and most of the "celebrities" (who are these people?) seem to use this expression. Of course I could add that if the schedules indicate that a show involving "celebrities" is to be broadcast, there are other channels and other more interesting things to do (listening to music perhaps?). The only show with "celebrities" in the title that is of the slightest interest is "Pointless Celebrities," merely because of the aptness of the title.
There. Thanks for that, I feel better now.
Actually, after last Sunday I'm feeling in the pink. Cock-a hoop one might say. Something has spurred me to make the following selections..."
A White Sport Coat And a Pink Carnation by Marty Robbins - "I'm tempted to sing "a pink crustacean." It's Jimmy Buffet's fault."
The Pink Panther Theme, by Henry Mancini -
Pink Cadillac by Bruce Springsteen -

"Best wishes to all RPMers (especially any Spurs fans)."
"Hi everyone, hope all are well and safe. "
Hills of Home by Hazel Dickens -
Over The Road I'm Bound To Go by Uncle Dave Macon -
"The other morning I was listening to the old (1983) tune ‘Calliope House’ recorded by ‘Boys of the Lough’ for their album ‘Open Road’. By happy circumstance, when called to the breakfast table, I left YouTube rolling along in the background playing whatever it would, there are several versions as over the years it has become a bit of a standard. Eventually YT got around to this version by Faoileán and I was so taken with it I abandoned my burrito to find out what it was. Since then I have listened to more by them. They are new to me and even after a quick search on the internet I couldn’t find out much more than that they are ‘a New Jersey Based Irish folk band’ (Faoileán means Seagull) I actually prefer this version to the original."
Calliope House performed by Faoileán -
Lyke Wake Dirge performed by The Young Tradition - "I first heard this song sung by the Young Tradition performed at a session in the folk club at ‘The Blue Boar’ in Southend around the time that this was released. I’d never heard anything like them… They made the hair on my neck stand up. It is still pretty powerful even after 55years."
"Along with other members of this community last Saturday at Stibbard Village Hall I caught a show headlined (two support acts!) by Adam Clark and Nic Zuppardi. It was a great night out. They are jolly nice people and superb musicians too. Catch them if you can. This was one of the tunes they played."
Martha by Clark and Zuppardi -
Seven Nation Army by White Stripes - “Oh…. Don’t even think about using my music you fascists,” Jack White wrote on social media following a Trump aide using this song in an online post. White Stripes filed a law suit citing copyright infringement. The video has been removed. I'm reclaiming the song."
"Went with friends to Camden Lock last weekend for the first time ever. Very interesting and unexpectedly found a vendor who had 5 huge boxes of vinyl with each album a fiver or under. Bought eight including two doubles for a total of £37 and they all turned out to be good players. Here's my 3 for the week. Hope they help to block out at least some of the bad news!
Best wishes to all RPMers as always."
Smokestack Lightning by Lynyrd Skynyrd - "I know, I picked one of their tracks last week, but this is a goody too - it's same title as The Wolf's but different song."
We're Ready by Boston -
Get Over It by Eagles -
"I'm in dancing celebration mode; yes, its birthday time! C'mon everyone, get up and dance around! Here're my picks."
Celebration by Kool & the Gang -
Boogie Wonderland by Earth, Wind and Fire -
Footloose by Kenny Loggins -
"Best wishes one and all. My musical experiences this week have been mainly live, via a couple of sessions and excellent concert headlined by Clark & Zuppardi. I’ve also stumbled across the following..."
It Comes and Goes Like Raindrops on my Window by Black Brunswicker -
Mbondi by Blick Bassy and RY X -
Egyptian Reggae by Pancho Acosta -
"Hi RPMers, hope all is good with you. Here’s my 3 this week."
Crystal Breath by Kim Deal -
City Girls by J.J. Cale -
Empty by Del Amitri -
"Hi RPMers, I hope you're all keeping well.
To answer the question Kevin posed in relation to his third choice last week.... Yes, Sal and I saw LLoyd Cole & The Commotions at U.E.A. on Tuesday, 10th December 1985. The ticket price was £4.75. And very good they were too...
Anyway, here are three tracks I've listened to this week."
Four Holes in The Ground by P.F.M - "A fine piece of Italian Prog."
Time and Space by Gnidrolog - "A band I first encountered at our local Art School Dance in 1972. This is from their debut LP 'Gnidrolog ...In Spite Of Harry's Toe-nail'."
Tam Lin by Fairport Convention - "It's possible I've picked this track before...("Week 7, 2021, to be precise....but then so have Piers and myself. This could be one of the most played RPM choices...." Tim the Archivist.) Incidentally, I recently watched the 1971 film 'The Ballad Of Tam Lin'. As part of the musical score, sections of Pentangle's version of Tam Lin were used throughout the film to enhance particular themes of the story. It certainly added to my enjoyment of the film."
"This week, a trio of favourite train songs..."
Mystery Train performed by Elvis Presley - "For me, one of the best records ever made."
Mystery Train, Pt II by Steve Earle -
Land of Hope and Dreams by Bruce Springsteen -
'Til Next Time...
