Welcome to the RPM Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 13th June 2025...this week it's the strawberry moon edition, the last full moon before the summer solstice...over to...
"Hi RPMers, I hope you're all keeping well. Here are three tracks from albums that I've listened to this week.... all from a very long time ago!"
House Shoes by the Bar-Kays - "This is from their Soul Finger LP released in 1967."
Famous Flower of Serving Men by Martin Carthy - "From the excellent Shearwatwr LP (1972). "
Bra by Cymande - "This is from their first album, also from 1972. Almost completely ignored when it was released, it has since been sampled numerous times by members of the hip-hop community."
"Hi folks. Cracking selection last week, thoroughly enjoyed hearing them.
Just in from a 12 mile stomp around a dozen ancient sites in Penwith with Carolyn Kennett (archeostronomer) & a fab group of folk.
Gig racing in Falmouth tomorrow + there's a shanty festival there all weekend too.
Music's always a good antidote, especially in worrying times."
Got To Have Love by Pulp - "Being played to death on R6, but I really like it."
Worry by Lottery Winners - "Another new-to-me act at Bearded Theory. Light, cute + entertaining."
Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys - "R.I.P. Brian Wilson."

"That's All Folks."
"We've just got back from a great gig at Swanton Novers village hall. It was Simon Care's band Banter who played two outstanding sets which were laced with interpretations of aged folk songs and shanties but given some very interesting twists. (Including a very fine reggae version of Haul away Joe...)
These two songs are familiar to most of us I’m sure. The first was an unexpected chart cover, the second an interesting interpretation of a song which in my day was sung by sea scouts! (Are there still sea scouts?)"

Silver Thunderbird by Marc Cohn - "I picked this around 5 years ago but it won't do any harm to pick it again - I like it! "
Voices In The Sky by The Moody Blues - "I heard this on the old steam radio during the week. I used to carry a bunch of Moody albums with me wherever I went."
Please Mr Jailer by Wynona Carr - "One of my favourite female singers on the Specialty label back in the day."
"I caught a series of programmes called The Song Detectorists (now available on Sounds) introduced by Matthew Bannister about the work of the Music, Heritage, Place project which is collecting and transcribing song and music collections held in County Records Offices. The programmes featured Nancy Kerr and Melrose Quartet. Interesting stuff. My first choice is from that series, the other two passed my ears during the week."

"Last Wednesday's Strawberry Moon coincided with a bumper day's strawberry picking on the allotment, (10 jars of jam), and did indeed look pinkish and was very low in the sky. I saw it through a gap between two houses caused by an alleyway; very atmospheric. This is the lowest the moon will appear in the sky until 2043, apparently. I feel a theme coming on..."
Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles - "The obvious one...of course."
The Flax in Bloom / The Strawberry Blossom performed by Sean McKeon -
Strawberry Man by Mike Scott -
