"This week I've chosen theme music from three of the finest American crime dramas to have appeared on TV this century.

Best wishes to everyone."

Woke Up This Morning by Alabama Three - "From 'The Sopranos' (first series started in 1999)."

Far From Any Road by The Handsome Family - "From 'True Detective', the first series, with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, which is the best. Not sure if I'd bother with the rest."

Long Hard Times To Come by Gangstagrass with T.O.N.E.-z - "From 'Justified', my favourite ever American crime show - all six series kept up a remarkable standard of excellence, and there is now apparently a "reboot" called "Justified- City Primeval," of which I have high hopes. It can of course be read as a modern-day Western (look at that hat!), and no doubt that's part of the reason I like it so much. In addition it is based on stories by my favourite ever crime novelist, the late great Elmore Leonard (who wrote some very good Westerns before he moved on to contemporary crime stories)."

"First of all many thanks to all of you for the amazing variety of last week's music. Most of which I listened to in the back seat of a car travelling from Portland OR to the Washington coast.

I have a special and sad reason to be here at this time, but more of that next week. Here are three 'Portland' pieces."

We Used To Think The Freeway Sounded Like A River performed by Richmond Fontaine - "Willy Vlautin, a writer with so much talent it's quite unfair."

"Dave Carter, taken so young and so unfulfilled. Here he is with Tracy Grammar..."

The Mountain by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammar -

"...and Portland's first if not finest covers band, The Kingsmen."

Money (That's What I Want) performed by The Kingsmen -

Piers -

"Three tracks featured on the classic triple album 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken' by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band which I realise I have been listening to since Christmas 1972. That is Fifty One Years!

The reason I have selected these versions of the tunes was that the album inspired me to go looking for the originals and lead me down all sorts of interesting musical byways!"

Cannonball Rag by Merle Travis -

Flint Hill Special by Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs -

"Hi folks. Hope you're all well.

Welcome to David & welcome back to Alan.

Here's my 3, rattled off rapidly as Betty bellows like a banshee & does her best to wreck roof & chimney. Poet..innit 😉 Take care all. Cheers!"

Bad Believer by St Vincent - "Awesome artist."

Saturn 5 by Inspiral Carpets - "Blast from the past."

Erkling by Empty Country - "New to me this week."

Tony -

"I've been dog-sitting for my son this week which has rather tied me to the house when I'm not trying to keep an extremely active springer spaniel amused each day. So I've been rummaging in the outer reaches of my collection looking for a lost case of Elvis original albums ('twas the anniversary of his death this week) and in the process found a number of little surprises which led to my selections.

Best wishes to everybody."

Wee Baby Blues Sammy Price and his Bluesicians featuring Doc Horse - "I came across this album I can't remember buying ("The Blues Ain't Nothin' But a Good Man Feelin' Bad") but I gave it a spin and liked it a lot. It's on the London American label and an uncommon stereo press. Sammy is the keyboard player and Doc Horse (real name Al Pittman) is the vocalist - a former member of The Inkspots."

Magic Smile by Rosie Vela - "I probably bought the album (Zazu) on the strength of this single but she is helped out by Donald Fagin and Walter Becker so the backing on all tracks is very reminiscent of Steely Dan."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir8vmQYFiwY

Should I Ever Love Again by Timi Yuro - "I can remember buying the album containing this song from Doc Cox who you might remember being part of Esther Rantzen's team on "That's Life". The place was St. Andrews Hall in Norwich for a VIP record fair. Doc had taken to selling records and stood out due to his amusing comments stickered onto the protective covers of  most of his stock. I bought this album because I like Timi Yuro but also smiled at his comments even though I didn't necessarily agree with all that he said viz.:

"Another female soul/jazz singer to add to the (extremely extensive) list of those better than Amy Winehouse. Hear her trample all over Amy on several versions of songs that she tried to do and failed. Here they are done PROPERLY!

only £4."

Which prompts me to ask - have you noticed the amazing prices currently being asked by HMV for vinyl?

(Coincidentally this very topic came up in conversation with someone at Northallerton record fair last Sunday where I had a stall of very reasonably priced music. I reckon two things are happening here; record companies/retailers are cashing in on vinyl's renewed popularity (these are the same industry bods who were insisting a few years ago that  vinyl was dead, remember), combined with costs of raw materials and energy for manufacturing LPs having gone sky high. Just as a thoughtful economic and environmental curve ball; does this not mean downloads are better value and also better for the planet? I'll leave you to mull that one over. Tim)

What price second-hand records in the future??"

(.....probably a lot less than you bought a new 2020s LP for!!! Tim)

".....3 4 U."

Goin To The River by Gozy Kilpatrick - "Another from the 'Playing For The Man At The Door' collection...."

Swinging With Django by Django Reinhardt et le Quintette du Hot Club de France - "This certainly speeded up my veg prepping at tea times this week!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWtrgCbaJrk

Meander by Ozric Tentacles - "Been warming up aurally for the Ozric's visit to York this weekend..."
