"Last week Kevin asked me to recommend a Charles Lloyd track which I always find a tricky thing to do. It's a little like coming up with a favourite memory from a Norwich City game over the past 60 odd years.

But what I can do is point to a few of the albums that were/are important to me.

My entry point : Manhattan Stories,  Dream Weaver, and Forest Flower.

The Missing Years : Big Sur Tapestry

ECM : Fish Out Of Water, Canto

Blue Note : Wild Man Dance, Tone Poem

I came to Charles through my musical mentor, an older cousin who became hooked on Cannonball Adderley, after an adolescent flirtation with Rudy Pompilli and The Comets. As always I am heavily indebted to him.

That's All Folks."

Tony -

"Here are my choices for the week. Best wishes to all as ever."

I'm Waiting For My Man performed by Keith Richards - "Recent single from Keith which I like..."

Are You Lonely For Me Baby by Freddie Scott -

The Ballad Of Crafty Jack by Lone Star - "...from "Firing On All Six."

Philip -

"Greetings to all RPMers from Swanton Morley. Last week Jacquie got a letter published in the EDP, but this week I've equaled this with a letter in the "i" paper.

Anyway, I thought I'd post this before nipping off to play (or try to play) walking football. Two numbers from forthcoming albums, and one from Mr. Cohen's "You Want It Darker" from a few years ago."

Singapore Sadie by Richard Thompson - "He still writes and plays better than most as he approaches his 75th birthday ( I always think he could have benefitted from a better singing voice, but nobody's perfect, not even Liz Truss, she said so herself)."

One You, One Me by Pokey LaFarge - "...from 'Country Rhumba'."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCw9kRXMy8Y

It Seemed The Better Way by Leonard Cohen - "This was featured at the end of the final episode of season 1 of "The Son," based on Philipp Meyer's superb book, and I've just re-watched that episode. Mr. Meyer made a cameo appearance in it as a Minister of the Church who takes part in the attack on the Garcia hacienda."

"Best wishes.

(COYB... or to put it another way "Uppatown!")."

Kevin -

"Greetings, pop-pickers! I'm a true nationalist at heart."

"Don't worry - the good kind. I've been in love with The National for almost 20 years. Saw them in London one memorable winter's night."

Fake Empire by The National - "Hard to believe this album appeared as long ago as 2007 and was their fourth. What the pianist is doing is really difficult to carry off and hand/brain taxing: playing 3 against 4. When the brass comes in towards the end you can hear the influence of their collaboration with Sufjan Stevens."

Bloodbuzz Ohio by The National - "I could easily nominate dozens of National songs [Tim - oh no you couldn't] but these three are the ones I've been singing in my head all week. Not sure Matt Berninger does himself many favours with this video! Trademark drumming on this song."

"Have a great weekend."

John -

"Hi Everyone, best wishes to you all. Here are three tracks that I've listened to this week. The first one is fairly long, clocking in at over eight minutes but the other two are very brief. Enjoy."

What Did I Say About The Box, Jack? by If - "Second track on their eponymous 1970 debut LP. Written by saxophonist/flautist Dick Morrisey."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_HyvsaJB5U

Statue Of Liberty by XTC - "From their first LP, White Music, released in 1978. Another highlight from this album is their version of All Along The Watchtower. I know that Hendrix did the definitive interpretation of this Dylan classic but the XTC version is a personal favorite. I may share it with you as one of my future 7DS selections the next time I give White Music a spin."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OT46ZAPGPAc

Tramp (Mono version) by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas - "I was playing an Otis Redding compilation CD in my car yesterday and on the spoken word sections of this track it seemed that Otis' vocals were way down in the mix (compared to Carla's). I was sure that this wasn't the case on my seven inch single of this song or the LP version. Consequently, when I got home, I played my original 1967 mono version of the King & Queen LP and was relieved to hear that the vocals were much more in balance (although the person on the faders still favoured Carla's vocals in terms of relative volume). Must be something to do with 'digital transfer' or some other technical thing that I don't understand...."
